i'm guessing you probably clicked this because you thought i had some tips for you but i don't, not really anyways. not beyond taking light/small hits that is, i guess. so here's the thing, i'm looking for tips. who has them? anything to reduce the amount of coughing, i guess is what i'm after.

i don't usually cough much when i vape, not unless i take a massive drag (i feel like i should say puff, this seems like an ex-smoker's trigger, "drag"), usually that is. right now i'm a bit sick so i've been coughing a bit more than usual, a lot more than usual lol. nasty cold or whatever it is. on the up and up but it has me wondering, what can i do to make my vapor smoother?

i've seen that there are some water-filtered vaporizers out now. not sure if any of them are actually designed for e-liquid but it seems like it could help a bit, no?

the other thing i've been wondering about is the juice itself. i've read a tiny bit about the whole vg/pg thing, but i honestly can't even remember which is which when it comes to their impact on the vapor. perhaps one blend in particular is smoother?

but here's the thing, i do also like what i guess is referred to as the lung hit sensation because it's part of what i think helped me transition easily from analog to digital (look how hip i am, i know what you guys mean by analog and digital now lol!). so is there any way i can get that throat hit while somehow getting a much smoother overall vaping experience?

i'm currently mostly using a juul+juul mint pods but i'm definitely open to using a different setup, especially if it's as convenient as the juul.

this also brings up another question for me: how many of you actually cough when you vape? i can't help but wonder if my coughing is largely the result of my years of smoking before switching because i see some friends that have switched to vaping that smoked for a lot less time than i before switching and they don't seem to cough nearly as much. seems like there's a good chance my insides are a bit on the wretched side these days after so many years of cigarettes :(

If vaping made me cough, I'd be worried. I'd try changing liquid composition (towards [VG only] if needed), testing nic strengths, dial down the watts.

hm, any idea what the pg/vg ratio is for juul pods? my searches are yielding different answers as far as the ratio is concerned.

You simply have to learn to vape, it is not the same as inhaling a cig. Hold the vapor in your mouth a moment before inhaling. Eventually you will stop coughing. I prefer direct lung hits myself and haven’t used pods so can't advise on juice. High vg juices are much smoother but the higher you go with vg the lower the th(throat hit).

If vaping is making you cough and you aren't smoking and don't have lung disease (and if you are using the Juul as a vaporizer which frankly isn't at all a cloudy device) I might suspect a PG sensitivity. I have one and it made me cough.

If you can't handle much (or any) PG there are ways to approach it, there ARE manufacturers of eliquid who make VG only liquids (you may need to thin it some with distilled water in the types of vapes you are using). You can also DIY which allows a variety of various options but it gets more complicated at that point.

You may also be sensitive to nicotine the Juul's pods contain 59 mg/ml at highest strength and yes it's nic salts but that is still a high percentage. You could try lowering the nicotine.

I coughed a fair bit before discovering my PG sensitivity and I'd probably get some of those off brand Juul pods and try VG only to see if it helps.

It could be flavorings it could be a "proprietary" ingredient it is hard to know. But, you should not have to be struggling not to cough. Time for some experimentation and if you have a vape supportive doc, said experimentation could certainly involve his input. I mean, it could be seasonal allergies, it could be a lot of other things. Etc.

Good luck,
Anna

I coughed a bit after long..puffs back when I used 50/50 pg/vg juice. But I was also smoking and vaping the absolute cheapest of the cheap. I still have 60mls of a juice that cost only 4 dollars. Honeydew sweet cream 30pg 70vg 6mg nic. Sounded good, I'd rather smoke dirty gym socks soaked in a mixture of cat piss and bleach. The flavor is ok but holy cow the throat hit! I now have a small collection of juices I cannot vape, most are 50/50 and have some sort of generic "melon" flavor. So I do 70+ vg and no melon flavor and havent had a problem.

I would suggest as others have said to change one thing at a time. Maybe change the flavor of the pod, then try a lower nic, and if that doesn't fail try a refillable pod and ask around to find a premium salt juice. Trial and error.

Some people might just not be able to vape either. My mom has tried several of my setups to try and quit. It doesn't matter what I try she ends up in a terrible coughing fit, lights a cig in frustration, then continues on what she was doing.

I had that as well, and like your mum it was the main reason why I thought vaping was not for me. It was always MTL kit, and no matter what combination of temperature/juice I used I would cough my lungs inside out. The vape shop even suggested I just hold the vapour in my mouth it was so bad !

I have now been succesfully vaping for 6 weeks with only the very occasional coughing fit if I go totally over the top [e.g. a really heavy dripper session]. These are the reasons I think I managed to migrate:

1. MTL is a definite no-no for me. The combination of a tight draw and lack of additional air would immediately start a major violent coughing fit. Curiously enough, this also happens to me with cigarettes that exhibit the same physical properties [e.g. low tar/restricted filter/really tight RYO]. I also get this when using restricted airflow devices such as spirometers etc.

2. A light airy DTL draw is essential. My first tank was the Cleito 120 in wide open mode, but I can't reduce the airflow below 50%. I've experimented with the Geekvape Loop, and can get that down even further to < 25%, but it is very airey and a built for squonkers.

3. Temperature. Too hot or too moist will trigger a coughing fit. I generally sit around 50W, I can go to 120W with some juices. Anything hotter than that and I'm in danger territory.

4. Throat hit. Contrary to the myth, I don't enjoy a throat hit. I don't think I'm allergic to PG, I just don't like the scratchy/hot experience.

I suffer from COPD btw, the reason your mum might be suffering such a reaction might be different so YMMV.

Hope this helps.

She does have the onset beginning signs of COPD. I dont own any MTL devices, id like to try it but I actually have a similar issue to you. If I cut the airflow down on some of my more restricted DL devices to almost MTL territory it makes me cough. I also cant do melon or a lot of lemon flavors, it's too rough for me. I'm thinking certain brands of those flavors dont agree with me so I avoid them. I just got a new tank yesterday, cascade baby, using the mesh coil at 55 watts it's cool and flavorful. To me it's ok but I like a warm very dense vape. I could get her to try this new tank out. Shes very crafty and handy but doesn't like to fiddle with stuff like some of us vapers do. A drop in coil tank would work for her.

I believe part of the reason for coughing is damage done from smoking, I coughed a bit when I started vaping a few years ago but it doesn't happen unless I get a nasty dry hit or a really harsh juice anymore. Your body is used to the smoke and the vape is new, the vapor particles are bigger and foreign to your body. I'm no doctor, scientist or biologist though.
