Hey guys, I've been having the top coil hotspot problem for a couple months. I'd really appreciate it if i could get your input on what exactly causes it. First off ill go over my setup. I'm running a 30 amp sony 18650 inside my Chi you clone. The atomizers im having this problem with are pretty much ever genesis atomizer i have. Aga t 2, I atty, and viscious ant kraken. I usually wrap a 4 wrap of 28 gauge kanthal a1 around .8 ohms. My wick has been solid 500 mesh, everywhere from lightly oxidized to very heavily oxidized. Usually im able to get the coil to glow evenly and after a short while i notice the hotspot come back again. I was wondering if anybody knows exactly what causes this?

The explanations ive heard are :

The distance from the wick to the center post needs to be extremely short or else it will make a top coil hotspot

The Tension is wrong on the top coil and that causes the hotspot

Some people saying having an insulated wick hole stops it

Ive tried messing around with the tension on the top coil to no avail, also making the distance extremely short to the center pin and its much easier on the kracken and i atty. The aga t 2 i generally need to bend the wick slightly. Either way I've tried both methods and have had no luck (or no luck for a sustained amount of time). Any input would be greatly appreciated.

distance is not really a problem. tension on the other hand will cause a ton of them. now you say it glows even when dry?

a pic would really help.

but my first question is at that wattage how are you testing this? for a high wattage build to work on a mechanical you must keep the atty tilted when taking a hit or firing the coil, holding the mod vertical will always make the top of the wick dry out too fast.

try holding the mod sideways and let the wick get good and wet then fire like you would to take a hit, i usually have this happen if not tilting when the battery is fresh, it usually goes away as the battery drains a little.

again pictures help a lot in these situations...................

I had that problem with my first RBA, an AGA-T2, a lot. Then I got an RSST, with it's insulated wick hole, and that problem went away. That insulated wick hole lets your coil heat from top and bottom both at the same time, and you just need to nudge the coil loops gently in between to work out the hot spots. I use a dental pick for this and it works like magic.

Get an RSST, you will not be sorry.
