Hi peeps and thanks for letting me in. Total beginner here so take it easy.
i bought an svd last week that came with 2 batteries, batteries say they are aw imr 18650 3.7v 2000mah.
batteries did start out lasting about a day but yesterday only about 8 hours. I have recharged them put them back in and everything looks fine till I put the head on and it just lights up red and does nothing when I press the button. Does that mean the coil in the top bit needs replacing?
Any help or advice with this greatly welcome, any upgrades, changes, or just hints that make it better for you appreciated.
i will now go and try reading as many other posts as possible till my brain hurts lol.

If you press both the + and - buttons at the same time does it tell you the resistance of your coil? Or does it say "non"? The burnt taste usually means your coils are not getting enough e-liquid.

Here is a great review/video operating manual on the SVD. A PBusardo Review & Contest - Innokin SVD & iClear30 . It's possible you could troubleshoot your problem by watching it.

Just fitted new coil and everything ok again. Is 4 days about normal for a coil to last? Seems a bit short. I have a cheap evod tank that's still going after a couple of weeks solid use.
Still playing with different liquids trying to find one I like so I'm using a few cheap systems from fleabay. I've found fleabay liquids to be rubbish so far, no matter what flavour they taste the same. I prefer Marlboro lights or any menthol I can get. Are there any liquids that do taste like normals cigs or just a case of changing my habit and getting used to something new?
Thanks all for the help.

How long your coils last depends on a lot of things.

What juice you are using. Some gunk up coils faster than others. Could be due to certain flavorings or pg/VG ratio.
What voltage/wattage you are using or the ohms of the coil (what power you are using, basically)
Whether you clean or maintain your coils in any way (soaking, rinsing, dry burning, etc...)
Whether you get a "dud" coil. Sometimes you just get a coil that's a dud and doesn't last as long as it should.

Howdy,

If you are looking to find the perfect Marlboro Light replacement you will end up disappointed. You might want to try vaping just straight up unflavored in your strength and mix of choice..For me, 30/70 @12 is right (I tend to chain vape when possible :D )..your mileage however may vary!

If you haven't yet ventured into any DIY juice and are leery of doing so, you can order straight unflavored in different concentrations and mixtures.

Personally, when I started out, after the first month I just ordered up some 50/50 @18 and went with that. It worked ok and vaguely reminded me of smoking cigs... but then I started experimenting with different mixtures and concentrations and found the mixture that works for me.

My best guess is either your atty isn't connecting well, or your battery isn't completing the circuit well. First things first, this is going to sound really stupid, but the very first thing you should do is make sure the battery is in the right way around. In most devices the positive side should be at the top, and negative at the bottom.

Now that the really simple stuff is out of the way, check the atty. When you've got a problem, it's usually something to do with that. Look at the atty connection plate on the device. Most of the time, in most devices, it'll sit on a floating gasket. It may have been pushed in too far to make a good connection. This is EXTREMELY common. Try using a bent paper clip, tiny flat head screwdriver, safety pin, anything like that, to pull it out a bit...carefully. Next do the same thing with the floating gasket that sits on your juice delivery system. If that works, don't screw the delivery system on so tight next time. You don't need to crank it down. On to the next common atty problem. You may have a short or a popped atty (broken coil). Though not as common as a pushed in connection plate, it does happens. Try a different device and see if that helps. If that doesn't help at all, I'm looking at the specs on your device and it says "battery safety protection" in one of the features. I'm assuming that means the device won't let you vape an unsafe resistance at an unsafe voltage for your battery. This may very well be your problem. What resistance are you using and what voltage are you trying to vape at? If you're cranking it all the way up with a low res coil, that's probably your problem. If you want to do high voltage, you need standard resistance, something around 2.0. And if you want to max out the voltage, you're going to want 3.0 or higher. This is a good thing. It will keep you safe. So check that out.

Now if none of that works, go for the battery. It's a telescopic mod right? First things first, play around with it a bit. Screw and unscrew it. Make sure it's twisted fairly tight. I have a telescopic mod (but mine's mechanical), and I had a lot of trouble at first (just yesterday in fact) getting a good connection to the battery. This may be your problem as well. If that doesn't work, move on to the connections. Look at the ones inside first. Does the connection plate look alright? Maybe dirty? Maybe it's pushed in too far. I'm not familiar with your device, but most sit on a floating gasket that can be pushed in too much. It's also entirely possible that your battery is a dud. Try the other one. As for the difference in battery life. You have a variable voltage mod. The higher you crank the voltage, the shorter your battery life.

But it's possible the batteries are duds. Or there may be something wrong with your charger. This is where a multimeter comes in handy, even if you don't have a mechanical mod and aren't running low res/subohming/rebuilding (in that case you want one to make sure you aren't going to blow your face off). Go to Harbor Freight if there's one in your area and get a cheap multimeter. Actually there's a coupon floating around right now that'll make it free. If you don't have one in your area, you'll have to pay a little more. Or raid your dad's garage; dad's tend to have them lol. Check the DC current (on the 20 setting) and see if your battery has any power. This will tell you whether or not it's the battery itself. It should read around 3.7. If it doesn't (and be warned cheap multis will be very fiddly), and you get nothing, or it reads anything significantly lower than that, it's your batteries or your charger not functioning.

If all else fails, it's possible that you may have fried the on board computer. Have you had any serious leaks? It's not common with high quality gear right off the bat, but it is possible that the connection plate gasket may have leaked. I did that to my Lave Tube years ago. If you can't get it working, hopefully you have some sort of warranty and you can get a replacement.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't see you'd fixed the problem. But I'm going to go ahead and leave this up for future reference if you have another problem.

It really just depends. Low res coils will die much faster than standard. Higher voltage vaping will kill coils faster than standard voltage too. Low quality will tend to die faster. If you drop them, you can break the coil. It kind of just depends.

As for juice, there is nothing that will taste exactly like a cigarette. But give it some time. Once your taste buds start to heal themselves, you won't want that anymore. I wouldn't buy juices on ebay. You never really know for sure what you're getting. If you're looking for cheap juices, check out EcBlends. Not the greatest in the world, but it's really good for the price, and they make their juices in a lab that's had all sorts of testing done. A lot of people like their dragon fruit series.

Thanks for all the help, it gives me a lot to checkout in future.
Think I may have found the problem though and it's probably that simple I'm a fool lol. It did exactly the same again with the new coil thing fitted after about an hour, but, I had just taken the mouth tip part off to clean, play and show the wife how it works etc. When I took it off I noticed the coil part unscrew at the same time as removing the tip but not screwing back in again when I refitted the tip. I dismantled it fully and rebuilt properly and all ok again. I remember removing the tip yesterday before it died but never noticed the coil unscrew, so I'm pretty certain that's all the problem has been, a loose coil. I'll chalk that down to inexperience and remember it for next time lol.

hi david w lodge,
sorry, there are no ejoose that taste like a real cigarette.
that's a lie to get people to quit smoking.
took me about 3 weeks figure it out.
however, there are a few liquids out there that kinda come close to a cigar ... but "taste" is personal and "smell" even more so.
don't get your hopes up finding joose that tastes like a Marlboro Light or Winston Light or whatever .. .
look for a joose that you like to vape - maybe all day.
try to find a "type" of flavor - fruit / coffee / tobacco-ish / tea / desserts
once you find a passable joose for your taste buds, expect for your taste to change over time as you come off of analogs so expect your favorite joose to change. i have lucked out and still have the same favorite joose.

Yeah, the top coil 30's can be finicky that way. I preferred bottom coil clearos when I was still using clearos, for a bit less troubleshooting, however I did like the taste from top coils better. For me, I decided that bottom coils were worth it in the end. I have a two hour commute, plus 8 hour workdays, plus 2 kids, so the less on the go troubleshooting the better for my life! You may want to look into a glass clearomizer as well, as some liquids can react with plastic over time. Citrus and cinnamon in particular. I've heard really good things about the Aspire Nautilus and the Protank 2 with the Aerotank base.

Yes been thinking about the glass tanks. I saw the aspire got voted best on one site but it's only a small tank. I would prefer the biggest tanks available to avoid messing about as much, my work day is between 10 and 12 hours a day aswell.

miniprotank2v2
standard workhorse tank.
- glass
- eGo thread
- changeable mouthpiece
- common, easy-to-find replacement coilhead.

I understand about a big tank; everybody wants a big tank ultimately, but in the early days, a few small tanks is better than 1 big tank; once you get settled in and understand your devices and know what flavors you like, then its time to get a big tank or two.

Meanwhile, especially with the price of eliquid, it's better when you use small tanks; plus with glass tanks, you get to practise NOT breaking them with the small tanks.

- oh and since you have an EVOD that you are happy with, there's also supposed to be a glass evod now.
The 1 think the miniprotanks don't have is that metal jacket that the evods have.

Welcome David!

Sounds like you've been inducted nicely to the forums :) Glad you're starting to get things figured out. It can take a bit of time, but reading as much as you can (this forum is a GREAT resource - and also a GREAT temptation on the wallet :D) I've been out here for about 3 months, and I'm *STILL* learning (and glad to do so)

Experiment and make it fun. I'm fortunate that I can get by with a few smaller tanks throughout the day, but I do love my Mini Protank 2. Easy to take care of (and I just recently learned to rebuild my own coils!)

Best wishes in your new ventures!

Cheers
