Toxicity of nicotine?

Out of curiosity I was wondering about the toxicity of nicotine and a controlled consumption of it. For instance I realize that if you were to extract with glycerin/alcohol it would dilute the nicotine a lot, but when first finishing a batch would it still be toxic if ingested or if it made contact with skin?
Thanks for a response in advance.

Hi Luke, Your question has merit.... for sure. Nicotine can be absorbed through the skin, in any concentration, if allowed to do so. Handling nicotine should be treated as if it where poison in any concentration. It is generally thought safe to be consumed as vapor at strengths below 42mg/ml. I personally don't make any final strengths above 32mg/ml. I choose not to mix with bases that do not exceed 50mg/ml in strength.

Without titration(look it up) of your extracted batch you could in no way know just how strong your extraction is .... and therefore could not know to what strength to which you would like to mix down to. There is a whole DIY section here dedicated to mixing liquids. Read your eyeballs out until the safety precautions all make sense to you. Good Luck.

http://wizardlabs.us/index.php?route=product/category&path=60_65 Most hard core diyers buy nic at the highest concentration and then dilute for mixing in recipes. You can only buy a 10% concentration as a private individual and it's cheaper to mix this way. It is toxic at that strength but once mixed down depending on the mix would only be an irritant to most adults. There are numerous stickees in the diy forum here advising of the care and precautions required around pets and children. I have spilled 60mg nic on my skin and no problem when mixing but I always mix by my kitchen sink and have ability to rinse it off quickly.

Thanks for the insider knowledge, gives me a good jumping off point of where to do my research.

Just curious as to flavoring as well, what is used? And are these flavorings made from essential oils or is it just aroma chemicals?

Essential oils are a big no-no in vaping. Oils do not belong in your lungs.

LD-50 of nicotine- "Human data: The fatal human dose has been estimated to be about 50 to 60 mg [Lazutka et al. 1969]. [Note: An oral dose of 50 to 60 mg/kg is equivalent to a 70-kg worker being exposed to about 30 to 40 mg/m3 for 30 minutes, assuming a breathing rate of 50 liters per minute and 100% absorption.] [http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/idlh/54115.html]"

You PURCHASE the nic in a 10% concentration or less. Doing it yourself (if you just want the nic part in PG) is very expensive and probably dangerous. In fact, you could probably afford a 20 years supply purchased before you managed to get all the proper stuff and safety gear to do everything the "right" way. (<--- Crap shoot estimate, to make a point.)

So basically, the extraction process doesn't matter. There are threads on making nic-juice from tobacco, but that's for flavor and other things (like WTAs) too. To isolate the nic is probably a PITA. That's why there's even trace amounts of "other things" in our nic base. I'm no chemist, but it just doesn't make sense (or cents) to do it yourself unless the nic base supply dries up.

Just order a case of nic at 100 mg strength and store it in the basement freezer. You can check into glass bottles for storage too. Use gloves if you have to transfer 100 mg stuff. PG and VG are likely to remain available. As are flavorings for candy making.

Just :2c:
