I have tried everything I smoked a pack a day for 27 years I quit 24 days ago & picked up vaping to quit next day was rough but have not had a craving since. For me I tried the pens & wish I went straight to a box mod wasted money. Box mode is so adjustable to your liking compared to a pen style

40 year (ex)smoker here. Vaping works. The trick is finding what works for you. I started with variable voltage pen batteries and disposable tanks. Now I have a wide variety of equipment. My personal recommendation for getting started would be a Nautilus or Nautilus mini tank and a 30-50 watt battery. There are so many out there now it is hard to recommend a single one. iStick30, Coolfire IV, etc. I would recommend a regulated mod with a self-contained battery for starting out.

Hello and welcome to the forum @dawn cordoba. Glad to have you here!:)

If you are interested in learning more about e-cigarettes (and all the parts and pieces) below is a blog post by ECF member @Baditude that I highly recommend for someone new to vaping.
Here are a few more links from New Members Information <= Link covers many topics. Here are two of them:
Nicotine

A "general guideline" for nicotine concentration in e-liquid to the number of cigarettes smoked per day. If you are subohming (resistance under 1.0Ω) cut these nicotine levels by at least 50% (or vape less).

06 mg = 10 cigarettes or less
12 mg = 20 cigarettes
18 mg = 30 cigarettes
24 mg = 40 cigarettes

eLiquid/Juice

PG = Propylene Glycol - the "flavor carrier" of e-liquid. A secondary source of "throat hit", but not as strong as the nicotine concentration. Some people have a sensitivity or even an allergy to PG. It's very thin.

VG = Vegetable Glycerin - the "vapor maker" of e-liquid. Used as a sweeter in many food sources, and also as a skin emollient. It's very thick. Often labeled just "Glycerine"

PG and VG are often used together in different ratios in e-liquid. For example, a 50/50 PG/VG ratio. Some juice vendors offer a range of different ratios as far as PG/VG.

I have never vaped..nor do i know anything about it. Been smoking for 30 yrs, a pack a day. Are there any ex smokers out there that can help me. What is the best vape, do they work? I have tried patch, pills....really nervous about quitting that i might lose my mind..lol. All/any advise is greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Dawn, and welcome!

You've come to the right place - MOST of us here are ex-smokers!

Other than the hardware (and Susan has put up some good links to start making sense out of that!), the biggest hurdle will be finding flavors you like in the strength that works for you. Don't restrict yourself to "tobacco-ey" flavors. You will likely be pleasantly surprised how nice - and effective! - other flavors can be.

If there's a local shop you can get to, most will let you sample different flavors. While there's a premium on store bought, vs. online (or DIY, but wait on that!), the advantage is that you can taste test before plunking down your $$. Once you're narrowed the field, you'll have better luck getting flavors you like online.

BACKUPS are vital. Once you're on the way, it would be a shame to not be able to vape because your one and only battery... topper... coil... charger dies.

And having at least two of everything will also let you have two (or more) flavors going at the same time. Many of us like to change up during the day. Multiple setups makes that a snap.

I was about the equivalent of a pack and a half daily of hand rolled pipe tobacco (cig taxes in WA are extreme, it was cheaper...) and made the switch in about a week once I got my flavors and nic level sorted out. 3 years next month. And my story isn't unusual!

I've been smoking about as long as you. I bought a vape so I could cut down, and it just rapidly ended up replacing them. Took me a few weeks to give up the few I still smoked, but there was very little willpower needed and no withdrawal or such. Pretty darn easy.
Now, if I could only do that with other things like caffeine...

You hit paydirt; there's a load of decades long former smokers here.

I smoked for over 30 years; 2packaday at last count.

My niece sent me a cigalike back in 2013.
Felt close enough like a cig; functioned close enough like a cig; but gah! taste was a no go; then i figured out it was a menthol; a few weeks later, on a hunch I checked around at the local pharmacies and discovered they had disposable ecigs; so I tried a few, and soon enough I was sure this thing could work.

Things have advanced alot since then and there's alot more options and good prices.

Many things will work. My best advice would be to just get started. Remember to set aside some $$ for liquids. Your tastes will change as you go along, and finding the right flavors will be one of the biggest hurdles. It has already be advised to make sure you have backups, but this is very important.

My advice would be to start simple and, while not cheap, at least don't break the bank right up front. A good box mod like an istick with a good tank will get you off to a good start. You can learn and experiment as you go along.

Buy a Kangertech Subox from your Local Vape Shop, so that you can be guided with what you should do, and then find a Juice that you will like from said shop, preferably 2 flavors. One tobacco and a fruit or some kind. And see how it goes!

You've gotten some good advice here. I was up to nearly 4 packs a day of roll-your-own pipe tobacco cigarettes after 42 years of smoking. I had tried numerous times to quit with no success. Vaping was the only thing that worked for me. When I got the right equipment and a juice that I liked, I was able to give up the smokes pretty easily, and it's been over 2 years since I had one. Yeah, it shocked me, too! Give it a go...you won't be sorry, and there are tons of people here to help you through it.

30 years of the cigs here, at 2 packs or more a day. Started on a whim with a cheap blister pack vape from a cigarette store when I was buying 3 cartons. Ended up taking 2 cartons back, gave them 5 packs to give to the next smoker who came in looking for that brand and kept one pack as a trophy, still unopened. You need a few things. 1. The right nicotine level, 2. a flavor of juice you like ( my first was a cinnamon green apple, strong flavor as my taste buds were muted and I didn't want a tobacco flavor) I'd recommend going to a local shop and sampling the flavors to find what you like "now" as the taste buds "will" change over time. 3. Decent gear. The iStick 30 w and Nautilus Mini would be my recommendation.

    4. Don't be shy, as you can see there are many members here for both moral support and to answer any questions you might have.

    You CAN do it!
