Turning smokers into vapers

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I'm in the military currently stationed in Korea. I've been vaping for about 2 years now. Many smokers ask me for advise on where to begin with vaping. Does anyone else have a tough time recommending a "newbie starter kit" to someone when you know they're not going to get the full experience that RBAs and more quality devices have to offer?

I have no problem recommending vision spinners because I still use one occasionally. It's really the topper that's important, I'll normally recommend a small 3ml carto tank like the u-DCTank, not the absolute simplest starting point, but a much better vape than an off brand ego batt and a disposable stardust atty

Edit: forgot to mention that my all day vape is DIY liquids in my rda on a mech...

Welcome Harry!

I'd say a starter kit is just that. A good introduction to vaping. If they end up liking it enough to pursue it, then you could also send them here. For many, a starter kit is all they need. If it keeps them of cigarettes, everyone wins.

There are so many facets to vaping I never knew of until I found this forum. Google search always lead me here, so I decided to stay. The weather is always nice here.

Now where's my cabana boy?

I wouldn't imagine so. Even as new as I am I know what mistakes I made and what I've been pleased with. More important that they experience the vape than push them before they are ready.
Thanks for the response, I guess I've been vaping for long enough now that I don't think of it as a smoking replacement anymore, but more of a hobby.

As a vaper of over 2 years, who still uses cigalikes, I don't see an issue recommending cigalikes. If aware of better devices, then just suggest cigalikes as starting point to get used to the vaping experience, but make note that there are umpteen dozen other devices out there (at a cost) and that most vapers graduate to those higher end devices.

Smokers truly got to want to cut down or cut out smoking to go hog wild on vaping like us pro vapers do. If not, they'll possibly be wasting money, and your time.

In my case, I didn't start vaping to cut out smoking (still will smoke today, though rarely nowadays). I got cheap gas station model, thought it worked okay (better than anticipated) and then did some homework to get better cigalike. And I'm happy with my set up to this day. I wouldn't turn down a bigger, better device, but also wouldn't spend more than $20, right now, for such a device, regardless of how much ECF members tout them as 'best thing ever!'

Well said, thanks for responding.

Thanks for the advise, I wish I new about this forum when I first started.

I agree. Being on the "other side" of the original question (the recent smoker-turned-vaper), just keep them away from the cheap disposable cig-alikes in my opinion.

My sister took me to her favorite smoke shop and they had a selection of kits and I picked the shiny one with skull and crossbones. Which is the correct way to choose anything, amiright?.

I had previously tried one of those supermarket cigalikes and it was so disgusting it put me off trying anything else for a long time. So as long as you're recommending something that can be filled with some delicious juice and has a decent battery life - and maybe not too expensive for someone just experimenting... the main thing is just getting them to try it :)

Funny that I came home to this thread tonight. I was out with a group of people and one woman pulled out a cig-a-like and started vaping it at the table. Everyone thought it was so cool and started asking her questions about it. She said it was great but that she still smoked analogs as well. Hmmmm.

So I pulled out my Itaste VV that had a tank of Vanilla Caramel Cappuccino on it and told her that THIS is what got me off of analogs completely. That the cig-a-likes just really weren't able to help me kick the habit. I let her try mine and she was blown away by it. She is coming over tomorrow so I can help her buy a set up and test some of the juices I have in my collection.

I am not that far from being an newbie to this. Just passed my one month mark of being analog free. The furthest I have delved into 'rebuilding" is in swapping out the silica wicks on my Kanger coils for cotton wicks.

I think when they experience a few hits, with a great juice on a starter kit is enough to get smokers open to the idea that there is a solution to "how can I kick that smoking habit" Once you open the door to them that way....it's their choice in how far to take it from there........

Nice. I hear if you get 7 people to stop smoking you automatically get into heaven. It is like an unwritten rule. All the rich people know this. That is why heaven is overpopulated with rich people.

I think I am at a month in too. I think I switched in December. I still have cigarettes and I don't want one. Congrats to you. Feel really good about yourself. It is still free to congratulate yourself. And easy.

I don't even look at RBA threads. I am a Newb. And proud. It is working for me.

Some smokers really need a cig a like to get comfortable with the idea they can do it. Others can go with an ego or vv/vw device right out of the gate.

I think tasty juice and good performing quality device that fits the person's needs is best on a starter set up.

ETA quality and performance don't need to equal big bucks

Look, they have to start some place, and it doesn't have to be at the end of the $300.00+ rainbow. First, if they aren't really interested in quitting smoking a $14.99 eGo starter kit will be just as big a waste of money as any mod/rda combination out there. And yes - there are people who neither have the capacity to deal with mechs and rda's to play safely nor want to turn this into a coil building hobby. That's their job to sort out - later. For starter equipment KISS - something that works and is easy to refill and is easy to maintain if you want to see them keep it up. In most cases for most people starting - a mech with an RDA isn't gonna be that.

Started a couple of friends off with a mech and rba right off the bat, and they are thriving. However not everyone is savy enough for that, I feel it really depends on the person and their level of commitment.

My friends I started off 5 chapters in are those that are tech savy and love to research while putting into practice, plus I knew if they started on an ego/protank they would have thrown it away and gone back to analogs because it wouldn't cut the mustard. I myself skipped to rbas and mechs in the first months because I needed something more substantial to keep me off cigs (which I did end up going back to cigs for a month or two because I blew it and spent too much on something I didn't like).

But there are those "set it and forget it" types who just want to puff and puff with no real effort. For those I try to start em off with an easy vv/vw mod with a good carto tank and see where they go from there. Unless they are a 2 cigarette per day smoker... then I tell em to try a blu/njoy while quitting.

In my opinion no real smoker should be started with a cigalike or ego/protank setup. They will just get frustrated and regress. And by real smoker I mean pack a day plus smokers. Having been there myself (was at 2 packs a day) I can see how a lot just give up and regress because its not working out, hell I almost didn't try again.

I have no issue recommending spinners to "newbies." Ecigs are very overwhelming at first. It's always amazing how much you have to change explaining an ecig to different people. Spinners do two things. I know it will give them a long enough battery, which mean it wont die on them and they need a cig. It will give them a better "hit," something that feels like a cig.
Also not everyone wants to rebuild and I dont assume that the "newbie," wont switch tomorrow but I want to give someone something that will work, that doesn't require much maintenance, and stops them from smoking.
