Brighton and Hove pubs use e-cigs to tempt back smokers
5:00pm Saturday 5th September 2009

By Tim Ridgway
Pubs have started stocking simulation cigarettes to beat the smoking ban.

Licensed premises in Brighton and Hove have begun selling electronic cigarettes as an alternative to punters looking for a nicotine kick.

The battery-powered substitutes, dubbed “e-cigs”, contain liquid nicotine capsules and produce steam when exhaled.

The controversial product, which has been banned in Australia, is being stocked by the Prince of Wales and the Regency Tavern in the city.

Aron Barnes, the landlord of the Regency Tavern in Russell Square, Brighton, said: “It looks, feels and tastes like an ordinary cigarette.

“Because we don’t have an outside smoking area it’s something which we can offer to smokers as an alternative.

“It’s only the same as a nicotine patch except you can actually control how much goes into your system.

“The more we explain, the more and more people are trying them.”

E-cigs, which can be charged either through a socket or USB port, are on sale for about £5.

They can be used inside public areas because no flame or smoke is produced.

The UK pub, per se, is close to hitting the buffers due to the smoking ban. Many of them are closing their doors, permanently, every day. Why would a smoker torture himself by sitting in a pub and not be able to smoke while he sips on his beer?
This is a good idea, I hope that all pubs follow suit.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for y'all that this takes off and becomes commonplace over there. I don't see this happening here in the states with the current political climate. Several of us have discussed an excellent idea that may work over there. For the pubs selling e-cigs, also sell 1ml vials of unflavored liquid, and stock a whole rack of different Capella, Bickford, whatever flavorings that the customers can use in their unflavored to mix their own liquid flavors. If you have a favorite pub around that is going the e-cig route, you may want to suggest this to them. Even people coming in with their own ecig would wind up buy the vials from them, just to try out different flavors. I know I would...it is a whole lot cheaper than buying a bunch of flavors only to discover I didn't like them (which I've done)

I have one and they are great, especially for winding up non-smokers & watching them almost explode. You are supposed to only have a drag every now and then though, not smoke it like a cigarette as each special filter contains about 25 cigarettes worth IIRC

Sounds good to those who already use e cigs, but I doubt that it would work for those who just wanted to use an e cig for the night to avoid going outside to smoke. The cartridges or disposables are the only practical solution in this venue IMO.

I know a lot of you are a bit shy about vaping in public places where smoking is prohibited. I don't get obnoxious about it, but I've vaped just about everywhere I've gone and have had no one in the least annoyed.

I play a lot of poker and go to a lot of locations where smoking is prohibited. Among the people I play with, there are a number of very staunch non-smokers. We have one club where we play that smoking is permitted in the bar area, but not in the area we play cards and you won't find these people anywhere near the bar. Not a singe negative comment and I've sat right beside some of them during poker, vaping away. In fact after I was eliminated today, I was having a cocktail and the staunchest, most vocal anti-smoker came up to me after she was eliminated and talked to me about our lack of luck for a good 10 minutes. I vaped away with not a word or a look from her.

I had more negatives from smokers when the FDA had their press release. Some of those people actually think I'm the one that should be concerned about my health. Go figure.
