So I bought a Ultrafire rapid charger with my 18650 batteries for my Silver Bullet and tried charging my protege batteries in the charger.

OMG, they charge in 20-30 minutes - Full Charge. I thought all chargers charge the same, but damn was I surprised.

My protected batts for the Protege charge in about 2 to 3 hours - sorry I find that odd using the same charger... humph....

PS I have 8 total - all the same

What model number charger is the Ultrafire charger? I have ordered a WF-139 hoping to get a faster charger for my 18650's. I know, except for the color, it looks just like the TR-001 Trustfire charger. The China manufacturers seem to do this a lot by building different chargers using the same housing.

batteryjunction has this note posted for the WF139:

NOTE: The power output of this charger is incorrect for the protected 3V 750 & 900mah RCR123A cells that we carry. We specifically do not recommend using this charger for those cells. Only use this charger with 3.6 & 3.7V cells.

If this is the charger you're using, you might need to reconsider.

I would be careful with reduce charging times. Might be charging at at higher rate than the battery is made to take. a battery down 70% should take well over half an hour to peak. Unless it is a 2C cell and these are not.

As a general rule longer, slower charges are better for the life of any battery.

I have separate chargers for my RCR123A batteries. The WF-139 was recommended in reviews on some posts on the flashlight forums. It is supposed to have better voltage regulation and current control for charging Li-Ions than the TR-001 charger. So I thought I would try it, I needed a backup charger anyway.

This is true, you should always use a charger designed specifically for the batteries you are using. The WF-139 is supposedly a better charger than the TR-001. Since the 18650's I use for the Prodigy will last more than 2 days the rapid recharge isn't necessary.

Batteries are fairly cheap.

The model I have is the wf-139. I am using 3.6v 14500 900mah Protected Ultrafires. I purchased these because I got a 10 pack and the charger for cheap on ebay. I haven't had a 14500 take longer than 1hour to charge yet. These same batteries in the tenergy charger take 3 hours. I don't know why the charger is recharging so fast, but it has been consistent. Maybe its the fact I'm using 3.6v batteries?

I wish I had a link to the post on that flashlight forum, I could give the exact data. The general theme was users reporting issues with the TR-001. The WF-139 was reported to have better voltage regulation and more accurate cut off voltage. All that and faster charge time. I guess time will tell.
