Upcomming NYC ordinance: what can we do to help?

Just read about this on a UK based forum. The link was originally posted by a British expat now living in NYC. We had such an overwhelming response to the EU petition from ECF members recently, I was just wondering if there's anything that those of us who don't live in NYC can do to help out? Any FB/Twitter campaigns etc we can join in on?

I'm looking forward to the Thunderclap, too. Have you seen this one which Dimitris from VP Live set up to run alongside the POTV Thunderclap? So now we have: a French one, a German one, a Spanish one, a Dutch one, a Scandinavian one and an American one! That's a combined social reach of about 400k!

I'm not sure how it works in New York, and really wish that CASAA would update the info on this more often, because NYC is really trying to fast track this through with no debate as Bloomburgs last debacle. Last I've heard is as far as concerning the Health Committee, they have all but made up their minds; and from there it goes to another body (city council) for official passing.

Below is the latest contact information that I found. You can help by at the very least emailing a testimonial. I spend a lot of time in NYC throughout the year on business, and my urging was something to the effect of my taking my business elsewhere if the city is going to over-regulate e-cigs and become such a "Nanny-State."

One of the Chicago Aldermam where I'm from put it nicely when he argued against an indoor/public use ban by saying "It's like we're punishing smokers for not wanting to smoke." Another Alderman said "If we ban this, we might as well ban humidifiers. Restaurants boiling heavily seasoned water is out as well."

I have also heard to direct efforts more specifically towards the Outer Boroughs (not Manhattan) if you are going to "mix it up" and choose to more personally pen an email. Things to concentrate on in the outer boroughs is an emphasis on how this effects the local businesses and efforts of higher minority concentrated populations to rid themselves of the smoking epidemic. Manhattan is becoming more and more like a Disney World theme park with Nannies holding are hands, but the Outer Boroughs can add more numbers and sanity to the council vote.

Thanks for that, Funk. I should have said in my OP: I've already emailed all of the Council Members. Hopefully everyone else will do the same. There are no borders with vaping as far as I'm concerned: we just need to make our collective voice as loud as possible as often as it needs to be heard. Legislation imposed in one part of the world has potential ramifications/implications everywhere else.

You could call and leave a message that you are a frequent visitor of NYC and if the ban goes through, it will no longer be a city you would be comfortable visiting. NYC gets millions of tourists every year. They rely on tourist dollars to support many things.

That's exactly the route I went with my second round of calls. This is just about the final straw in my patience with NYC's regulations.

They are piling on incentives to why one should AVOID traveling to NYC. It used to be you'd be a bit worried about crime back in the 80's. Now you don't wan't to go because you'll potentially get stopped and frisked, you can't order a large pop, and you can't partake in activities that help you quit smoking cigarettes.

Thank god Bloomburg is out. NYC is on such a rampant nanny path of over-regulation. it isn't hard to imagine a future ordinance of having to raise your hand in order to ask permission to stand up from your table at a restaurant and use the restroom; because "people freely walking about indoors present a serious collision hazard to children."

I'm not sure why you would say "this suggestion is NOT supported by CASAA" regarding phone calls? Right above your suggestion to call is the text from CASAA's Call to Action stating "While e-mails are easier, phone calls will have a larger impact, even if you are simply leaving a message after hours." So we absolutely encourage folks to call!

Regarding updating the information, the NYC CTA was just updated on Thursday with the latest information that we had and the new contact lists. I also sent out an update email to the New York members signed up for our email alerts. We will continue to update as we get new information.

I believe he was referring to blocking your caller ID and pretending to be from NYC. I have to agree, while it would get the job done, it is a questionable tactic.
