Can vapers really be this stupid about battery safety? Why would someone pack a bad with batteries, and NOT take the batteries out of the device and into a protective battery box... or similar such protective device? Which leads me to another question. Knowing that WE are being scrutinized in every way now, why would someone be this careless, or is it possible people who are anti-ecig could go to this length to make a "point" by deliberately ignoring safety?

an understandable reaction really, lithium ion batteries in general are a restricted item for any type of air transport, they get classified the same way as chemical oxygen generators (the ones you find installed in the overhead dropdown masks on every airline)

You can carry them in the cabin, not in checked baggage.

Yes, people are really that stupid but many are just ignorant. It's just sad.

truthfully this still does not solve the problem, ever had a pen explode in flight? happens all the time, yes the cabin is pressurized but it does not maintain a sea-level/wherever you left from altitude. these batteries have celophane insulators and all kinds of internal isolation techniques that im positive are not friendly to altitude changes, its not a good idea to have them on a plane at all, better to ship them or something.

The TSA DOES ask that anything with a lithium battery go onto carry-on, and not checked luggage. (AFAIK, they don't DEMAND it, like they DEMAND that you not try to bring a 16-oz sealed bottle of water through the checkpoint, even though you can buy one right past the screening).

And I bet very few laptops and cellphones actually go into checked baggage.

I would agree, except for the statement that the drop-down masks actually provide oxygen. (The bag "may not inflate")
Their primary purpose is psychological - they make you feel like there is something you can do and that the airline/manufacturer has considered this as a possibility and come up with a solution -- with the added side-effect that they stifle conversation.

Like they are required to teach you, at the beginning of every flight, how to fasten a seatbelt that has been illegal (no chest strap) in motor vehicles for how many years now because it doesn't actually provide protection on an impact, even in a car?

Assume the position.

Removing all li-ion batteries from flights may pose a problem, they're used in the planes.

Where to start.......ok behind the panel that the mask comes out of there is a canister that burns and produces gaseous oxygen, the bag may not inflate because of potential variations in the cabin altitude/pressure, the seatbelts are designed to work in concert with the seating system as a whole. Survivable aircraft crashes usually involve a large vertical component to the impact, the seat bottom is designed to absorb a lot of this energy, the belt works to keep the passengers trunk in position, forward momentum is actually largely arrested by the seat in front of you it's designed to collapse and break in a very specific way.

I know this will be faced with much incredulity but you need to look for the info yourself, I have personally witnessed and participated in tests for continuing development of all these systems, I've repaired and installed them, they work ppl. Look at the statistics of deaths in cars vs deaths in aircraft crashes per year and tell me which industry is looking worse.

Lithium ion batteries are amazing, I'm not arguing that, but firstly the dreamliner is a project plagued with problems and setbacks so referencing that is a little bit of a wash, also a proper installation of a lithium battery in an aircraft will include at least a double redundant safety system, your laptop however does not, neither did the pv in the originally referenced news story.

From the article:
Last year Boeing grounded its entire fleet of the next-generation plane after the lithium batteries on two of the aircraft caught fire. (The 787s returned to the air after being fitted with a modified system to protect the aircraft against battery fires.)

So the original safety engineers thought they had it covered, not very reassuring. Laptops have incorporated updated safety systems since the bad old early days, very much like the 787. No idea what sort of e-cig was referenced in the original story, or what sort of safety circuits it may have had, or may have failed.

The bags don't inflate because they are not providing air, they are providing a concentrated oxygen....which will have a lower pressure then the air in the cabin. However, the oxygen is there for one basic reason, breathing higher percentages of oxygen creates a state of euphoria, which will keep someone from freaking out

Note that at the end of the article they are taking a poll on opinions of e-cigs on airplanes :D I voted for "smoke" them!

I also noticed that the latest comment is from a non-smoking individual who says that he hopes all smokers will switch to e-cigs because he is allergic to tobacco smoke :) I am glad to see non-smokers on our side, for whatever reason they are :)

Sadly, that ran across my mind, also..

(The same goes for the guy with the exploding PV at Vape Blast.. Was it an intentional act of sabatoge from our opponents? Wouldn't put it past them...)

Then again, some people are just stupid, and don't really prepare or look into things or even use common sense..

Before I took my 1st flight as a vaper, I did my online resarch on how to fly with gear.. Got my answers from ECF & TSA's website..

GrimmGreen also has a YouTube video on it...
