I ordered some stuff from Amazon a couple days ago. The package was scheduled to be delivered today. When the package shipped from the warehouse I went to the tracking page and requested that it be held for pickup at the ups office near my house. Alright, done I can pick it up on the day it was originally intended to be delivered from the office right? (according to the tracking page I could pick it up on the original delivery date) This morning I get an email saying that the delivery date of the package has been changed and it will be delivered on Friday... So I go the the tracking page and again request that it be held for pick up... I can pick the package up on monday... They just took it on themselves to deliver the package anyways? Now I have to wait through the weekend to get the package, it boggles me how inefficient and messed up this company is. You would think, they would relish the fact they don't have to deliver my package, it saves them money!

Oh and I can't have the package delivered to my house because my dogs will eat it and the UPS guys aren't crafty enough to put the package on the brick wall in front of my house. I would've had it shipped to a friends house but who thought they'd mess up holding a package?

End rant...

Have it delivered at work??
Can't, too many people were doing that with their packages. It was "banned".

Same here, and we have a department and staff just for inter-office mail, as well as a fully staffed shipping/receiving group ...

One time about 4 years ago, someone complained, claimed their package was lost by company personnel (it wasn't). After that, no personal package receiving ... :(

Part of the problem for me is that I don't really have an office. I have a room but no reception area so in order to receive packages even discreetly I have to use a different department in the college. (University of California, Riverside)

I'm actually really glad the folks I order from use USPS. Funny enough, I've always gotten wayyy better service from them than UPS or FedEx.
With packages that are small enough to fit in my mailbox USPS is usually pretty reliable, however they do mess it up sometimes and with packages that are too big to fit in the mailbox it's usually a nightmare. I try to get signature confirmation as much as possible, it ends up with a trip to the post office but I'd rather make the trip than have them lose the package. UPS and FedEx have yet to completely lose one of packages but their tracking and delivery times are a complete mess for me. I end up having to go to the warehouse that the packages is delivered to my house from to get a reliable answer as to the package's location.

Man UPS is a PITA.... that's all I'm saying. Last package I got was my computer from Newegg. It shipped from Tenn. went to Atl., then to Birmingham.... then instead of going to the city nearest us with the UPS office.... It went to JACKSON MISS.!!?? when I finally got it, it was all banged up and didn't work at all... sent it back but it had t be shipped all the way to CA then 3 weeks later I finally got a replacement. jeez!!!!! I really wish they'd (FED EX and UPS) combine already cuz Fed Up certainly fits!

I ran a distribution center about 14 years ago and Fed-ex was the best, also the most expensive. I sound like a commercial but if it had to be there tomorrow morning I was very confident in them. Something must have changed there, probably lower prices with the intent of matching competition but also resulted in lowering service. There was no Fed-ex ground back then. But that is only a guess, it has been a few years.

As for quality of packaging we used to try new ways to pack then throw the package as hard as we could at a concrete wall. Open it and observe. Repeat. And we rarely got damaged goods returned. Moral of this story is that vendors are responsible for poor packing, they know how ALL delivery services will treat a box.
