I ordered a Joye 510 Manual USB Passthrough the other day and I was wondering what your thoughts or experiences are with these things.

Here is a link to he one I ordered: Joye 510 Manual USB Passthrough

I have heard that they can be dangerous to your PC because they draw to much power. The one I ordered has a battery attached to it and from what I have read, it's there so your computer can use a lower voltage to charge the battery. Then the battery can do the work of powering up the atomizer. Since the atomizer is not drawing power form the PC's USB directly, will it be/is be safe to use? I ordered this thing because I am always on my laptop and I thought it would be convenient. I don't really want to mess around with USP - AC adapters as that would actually be a hassle.

I would love to use this on my computer, are any of you using it now? Have any of you had problems?

I had the same concern so I asked the veterans. Here's a link to the answer. Happy vaping :). Passthrough advice

Thanks for the link, I actually asked my question to the vets 2 days ago and for some reason my post was never approved, so thats why I'm here asking today. I will keep track of your post as well.

As a generalization (there's a lot of different hardware out there)... The battery driven 3.x volt PT's that charge via USB won't fry the USB ports, like the OP said. They usually draw less than 500 ma. The 5v direct PTs draw more amps than some can handle (hence the comment by Digs in post #5, and in the link in #2). Some USB ports are limited to 500 ma, for example. They are supposed to shut down, but who knows. You'd have to test every combination of every device type to be sure. In general, I recommend people use a wall wart (2.0+ amps) for the direct 5v PTs. YMMV.

I have read about them hurting a computer---but I do think that was the ones that didn't have a battery.

Find out the specifications of your ports on your laptop before venturing into this research project.....then on the pass thru and see how they line up. Sorry, not technical enough to give you the right terms.

It is quite possible that the early warnings are "out of date" as more powerful USB ports are being used on the computers as we are using them for more devices that require it.

I, too, would love a guru to answer this in 2011!

EDIT-- OK -- while typing ----AttyPops Said it! BTW, I sure don't think the one you bought is a 5v PT.

It was approved, the thread hasn't been moved yet. Here's a preview :)

I have heard that the USB PTs can be a risk for computers as they draw to much power. I have also heard that the PTs with the batteries are fairly safe for compute, as it uses a lower voltage to charge the battery and it's actually the battery that does all the work of firing up the atomizer.

My question is have any of you use this. Are your PCs ok? I am on my labtop all the time and ordered this because I though it would be perfect. I do not want to bother with a USB to AC adapter as was would defeat the propose of convenience (Using a wall adapter would be a pain in the ...).

Any thoughts?

Me:
Depends on what you might consider a bigger pain in the ... - plugging in a usb adapter into a wall or replacing a motherboard. Now the possibility of the inline batt does reduce that chance but the possibility still exists if there would be a short. Some might say it's a low probability but most here will recommend not connecting to the computer if you don't have to. Adapters go for less the $5. Don't know the current price of motherboards but it's your choice. :)

Kurt:
I have not fried a mother board with a regular 510 PT, but I have fried USB ports. The charging circuit in it can exceed the current rating of the port. I have also fried USB cables with other similar PTs. The ones that I have found that seem to be much more computer friendly are the eGo/Hello PTs, since their circuit only draws 300 mA, and most USBs on computers are rated to about 500 mA. None the less, I still use an external AC/USB-5V converter with my passthroughs. Not worth the risk to me.

To be safe and not have to worry about the question, I'd recommend getting a USB/AC Adapter capable of 2 Amps or more output. They are only a few bucks and I'd much rather fry one of those than my computer. Plus they give you the added benefit of being able to vape anywhere there's a AC Outlet not being tied down to a USB port. That to me, is worth the cost in itself.

As a general rule a 3.7 volt pass through is ok to use on a computers USB port. At 5v the amperage draw is higher and worse case could damage the port, motherboard or other internals. Even if it doesn't and everything seems fine you're not likely getting the full effect at 5v from a computer.

2 amp AC to USB Adapter, ideal for Passthroughs

Wow, thats strange. I am looking in the ask the veterans section right now and do not see my post at all?? Very strange. Thanks for the copying and pasting of the responses, much obliged!

What happens is that you submit a question and it is moved to the vets forum for answers. It stays there to give enough vets time to look over the list and answer the ones they have ideas on. It's a bit different than the earlier 'experts' forum - now all vets can answer and so the viewpoints are wider, but still from experience. After a few days or as long as 'lightgeoduck' gets to it (he has a day job :) then he'll move it to where you can see it in the 'ask the veterans' forum where the thread is closed.

Note: "vets" and "experienced" doesn't mean "right" :) but it does avoid the situation where someone with 6 posts is advising someone with 2 posts to use oven cleaner to clean their atomizers and the person with 2 posts believes them :) That said, sometimes someone who is an older newbie - say 30 posts...lol - may have an answer that is closer to the 'newbie experience' and communicates it well.

Hi Snoopy Fish. I've been using the very same passthrough from litecigusa since February 12. It's a very good passthrough. I'm actually vaping on it now. I had the same concerns that you're having now. I had read all the horror stories about people harming their computer by plugging the passthrough direct into the usb port. So, here's what I did. I ordered this $5.00 adapter from cignot.com. I plugged the the passthrough into the adapter ,then plugged the adapter into an extension cord that was then plugged directly into the ac wall socket. It only cost $5.00 and it's still working great,as is the passthrough. Here's a link to the adapter I use. Click here

Thanks for the link. There are some real good prices on that site. I ended up ordering that adapter as well as 3 extra batteries and 3 extra atomizers.
