My favorite ashtray was in college, I found a small (less than 1 foot across) hubcap that worked perfectly in our dorm suite - with 8 smokers it filled fast.

I'll keep the ones I have, they're small, clear, flat ones, like Petri dishes, but with really thick glass, I bought a set of them years ago, half got used as ashtrays, and the rest I found were perfect for mixing varnishes and glazes for oil painting, and they're still used for that to this day - so I have more mixing dishes. :)

The only other one I have is a Waterford ashtray that was on my dad's desk, that's going on the shelf.

I inherited a big, beautiful Lalique crystal ashtray that now holds floating flowers. The only other ashtrays I kept are mementos from my travels (some people buy t-shirts, I bought ashtrays). I still keep them out, as decorative objects and reminders of good times. All the utilitarian ones went to the local charity shop or the trash.

There's a big stack of clean ash trays on our dining room table.

Since they're all made of glass, I guess they could be recyled. But many are rather nice ... seems like a waste to just toss them.

In the meantime, some of them are now acquiring safety pins from dry cleaning, or gathering different denominations of coins.

Still others end up being filled with odds and ends such as nail clippers, throat lozenges, memory sticks, vitamin pills and chap stick dispensers,

What do you do with yours?

Funny you should mention this. I kept all my expensive lighters. However I maintained the ash trays for a long time in use. Since I was using cig-a-likes I would set them in the trays when I put them down. Kind of gave me a little more analogue feeling and helped me transition.

Majority of my glass ash trays were recycled through the local recycling program. I kept a few that I had acquired while in the Navy but they have been put up for momento sake. I have NO ash trays for use for the smoking of cigarettes as there is no smoking in my home. All the plastic ones were trashed.

I got rid of, or put away, any ash trays we had when my husband quit smoking due to lung cancer, and I quit smoking in the house....the last 2 I had were actually heavy glass candle holders and one of those may still be on the front porch, but no body at all that we have over smokes anymore, so guess I should bring that in and clean it up.

How about cigarette cases - anyone have some nice ones? Husband still has the attractive engraved one I gave him when we were dating, and a handmade wooden one made by his son for him. I have one of those cheap soft ones that snap open and shut and have a place for a lighter....I'm sure husband still has some metal lighters somewhere too (he never throws anything away, lol!)
