I am sure this had been said, and doubt I can say it any better than others here, but going to throw in my two cents anyway:
I am a fairly new member of the V4L family; and I hope I am justified in adopting myself into the family since Steve, His superior product and awesome company, as well as the caring people of this forum have made such an incredible positive impact on my life. (Just passed my one month mark analog free thanks to the afore mentioned)
Although I have not has the time to spend on this forum that I would like, I have gained a great deal of knowledge and benefited tremendously from the information posted by the regulars here. I came here looking for the answer to a few simple questions and ended up with support surpassing my wildest imagination. I would have never expected to have access to the principle of the company (and his amazing staff) that I had just placed my first order with; but indeed, Steve responded to one of my first posts with his now familiar concern for my satisfaction and happiness. (my 4th order is waiting for me at my PO Box, and I’m so POed I was on the road for eight hours last night and didn’t get there in time)
I shared this common scenario because I am very concerned with the obvious shift in tone and character of this forum. I am somewhat embarrassed to say that I completely missed the recent posts that have caused so much havoc here, but honestly am not sorry. You see, I would never consider posting a derogatory or flaming comment about a company on a forum dedicated to the support of members attempting to better themselves trough the use of their product. It is simply uncouth, in my opinion. If you have a problem with the product or customer service you are so much better served through patient, considerate DIRECT contact. Make a phone call, send an email write a formal letter; don’t purposely destroy the continuity of a group of innocent people trying to resolve personal struggles, technical issues, sharing personal victories and in general enjoying the support and camaraderie of a “family” of like minded people.
I realize we here that are loyal, grateful, and happy customers of V4L have a tendency to flaunt our zealous appreciation for the unsurpassed customer service, and superior product provided by Steve and his company, as well as our appreciation for his obvious concern for our wellbeing and happiness. I realize that is sometimes human nature to attempt to force a resolution to a issue by bringing it to the attention of the company’s most loyal customer base; thinking that you can threaten future sales and compel the company to do whatever it takes to keep you quiet. However, by the nature of the beast, those loyal customers are loyal for a reason and said human usually ends up looking like an (…add fitting superlative here).
It is also human nature that when a group of people feel so connected to, and protective of their core (Steve and V4L in this case) as many of the members of this forum obviously do, that they will tend to strike out reactively to any perceived threat to the continuity of that relationship; thus the recent transformation to the character of this forum.
As I said before, I have not read any of the posts that caused this transformation; and that is by choice. I can usually tell by the title or the first few words that a post is going to be of a negative/unreasonable nature and I simply do not wish to use my limited time here with that.
I realize that Steve would feel compelled to respond since these comments are directed at him personally (His Company) but I don’t believe we should give them the time of day. I realize everyone wants to let Steve know they stand with him and are dedicated to his product, but we can do that independent to the offending posts. If no one reads or responds to the treads than the poster will not succeed at causing the disruption that they intended.
I hope that this forum can quickly return to what it was and that I can spend more time here in the future. I realize there is damage done, or at least Steve and his company have been forced to mature a little differently than he planned, but I am sure he realizes it would take much more than some ranting to shake our resolve.
I would like to have the opportunity to pay the “family” back for everything I have come away with here …that is going to be a tall order!
I also hope this made sense and didn’t bore everyone to tears …I don’t have time now to re-re-read before posting so I hope my exhaustion does not result in incoherent rambling.
Sincerely,
A family member (I hope!)
