v5 Box Mod w/ 2x10440 batteries, Charger ?

Hello,

I'm going to be building a box mod using two 10440 TrustFire 3.7v batteries and had a question about charging.

I've read a few threads that talk about using an eGo USB charger and modifying it to connect to the circuits inside the box mod to charge the battery without removing the battery from the box. All the threads I've seen speak specifically to 1x18650 3.7v battery being charged this way.

My question is, will the same modified eGo style USB charger work to charge two 10440 3.7v (rated at 600mah each, probably actually closer to 350mah each) batteries ran in series (7.4v total, regulated down to 5v at the atty)?

If you check out the modders forum here, once you can get out of the new members forum that is, you will see that internal charging has been discussed ad nauseum. In series, you will have to get a seperate charging module, designed for 2 cells, yada yada...Any charging module available that will work is big enough to make 10440 batteries pointless.

If the batteries are in parallel you can use the setup you are thinking of safely, but for two batteries instead of one it will effectively double the time it takes to charge. Of course, that also runs into the problem of only allowing you 3.7v.

Yeah, agreed. Check the modder's section. There's 100 threads on the topic of built in chargers. It can be done, but you have to know what you are doing.

Not to be too negative, but the main advantage to me of a battery powered PV is to be mobile .... I charge batteries on a charger on the counter and just swap em when needed. No cord hanging off the PV and no fussing with the charger logic. I know people want to build them in so they only have to carry a spare cord with them for travel. But having a few sets of batteries is just as easy, IMO.

If it's your 1st mod... I'd stay away from it. If you are an experienced modder... go for it, but check the facts 1st so you don't make the batteries "go boom".

Thanks for all the replies.

The more I research, the more trouble it seems to be to build a 5v that is able to recharge the batteries without removal. So I think I'm just gonna build a single 3.7v 14500 battery mod for now, then I could use the charger idea I posted earlier. Then possibly in the future look at some sort of voltage booster so I can achieve 5v from a single 3.7v battery setup.. I'm not an expert with electronics so I don't want to go that route just yet though.

Thanks for the advice. I would like to build a 5v setup in the future without a built in charger, where I would just swap out the batteries like your saying, but right now funds are kind of limited so I'm looking at the cheapest possible build. Buying extra batteries and a standalone charger is a little out of my budget right now. Basically right now I'm looking at less than $20 for the setup I want to build with a single 3.7v 14500 batter, 2xAA battery box, push button switch, atty connector, led, female DC charging jack for the box, and male DC charging jack for the Ego. I already have an eGo charger to modify.

IF you are gonna use a 14500, you can use a ptn04050C booster chip with 1x 14500. That booster chip defaults to 5v if you don't adjust it. You can't use it with the 10440 because the current pull is too much for that tiny battery.\

EDIT: Once you get over to the modders forum, search for the .44 boost box mod. It has the schematic and everything for it.

New question maybe someone can answer for me...

I'm looking at this single 18650 battery holder and it has a PCB attached to it, what exactly is that for?
Battery holder : Li-Ion 18650 Battery Holder (1S1P) With 2.6" long 20AWG & PCB (1S1P-18650)

Is that PCB basically just a protection circuit for using unprotected batteries, or is it a charging circuit that would allow me to basically connect any DC charger with appropriate current and voltage?

edit: also, does anyone know there I could find a 2x18650 battery enclosure for a box mod?

You'll also need some room in the box for other stuff (switches, boosters, etc). You should head over to the modder's section where you will get a ton of advice and examples.

If you plan on a booster in the future, use high-drian AW IMR batteries (but they are more expensive) for 14500's at least. The 18650's may put out enough amps already. Boosters need amps.

$20.00.... Hmm. $10.00 charger, $5.00 battery X 2 = 20.00 and you don't have the e-cig yet. The e-cig box for a basic nico-stick type 3.7 volt is $8.00 or so. You need a high-amp switch, connector and box. LED optional. You can do it for $30.00 + shipping easy and have good stuff for the future (like a dual-batt charger).

Yeah I wasn't gonna order a stand alone charger because I was gonna use an eGo charger I already have. But I decided to go ahead and order a standalone charger anyway. So all total, I've spent $45 so far on my 3.7v box mod. Would have been much closer to $30 but I had to buy a soldering iron too because I don't own one. I also don't currently have all the proper tools for drilling the holes and stuff so I went ahead an ordered a box mod kit from MadVapes that comes pre-drilled, an 808/901 connector because the kit only comes with a 510 connector, and the soldering iron. Then I ordered my battery from LightHound (an AW 14500 750mah). I figured this would be the best easiest route to go for my very first mod. I'll good bigger in the future :2cool:

edit: I also ordered the standalone charger from MadVapes as well.

Just finished my first mod! Its a 3.7v box mod with an AW 14500 750mah battery. I soldered all the wire connections and then use epoxy to seal the cart connector and hold everything else in place. I love this thing! I definitely see more mods in my future, and bigger ones! :2cool:
