#3 he was just under a year old when we got him, but he had definitely already had a hard life, poor guy. He had been bullied by the bigger dogs, got almost no attention from humans, lived outside in a pretty small yard, wasn't allowed to eat very much because the other dogs wouldn't let him, and then on top of that he contracted parvo and almost died. But he is very happy and healthy indoor dog who gets lots of love now.

Bella is from Tucson. She was turned into the county pound for barking and digging. I got her from the Great Pyrenees rescue in Gilbert when she was 1 1/2 years old. It's been a 1 1/2 now and aside from maybe 3 woofs and no holes dug in all that time, she doesn't make a sound. Only coughs at me when she wants something. Except New Years Eve at midnight she got mad at the gun shooting outside and made me let her out. She stood in the middle of the yard barking and snarling as if she was mad that someone is throwing noise in her yard. It was an amazing and a very scary noise she made, I can see how they chase bears away. I called her in and she huffed and puffed a couple of times and just looked out the door. She is fearless, nothing scares her. Her favorite game is punching. I punch her (hard) and she jumps all over me. She wins every time.

I have seen them being trained for water rescue here at one of our lakes and I have owned a half breed Great Pyrenees... whoooo long, long ago LOL She was a serious lover =] Meghan was her name LOL Stole my best friend's name for her future daughter, she was ...... for years :p Yeah, Bella looks like a cuddle bug =] Emmy hates to cuddle, my only complaint about her... she likes her space...

Good for you =] and him!

LOL, water rescue? She never got in the pool. I never want her to either, it'll take a day for her to dry. She is a cuddle bug, a big one. If you ask her if she wants to get on your lap she jumps right up there, sometimes from 5' away. That can kill you. She can't curl up on your lap she just lays on top of you with her head on your shoulder. I can't move, I can't breathe, worst thing is I can't see any part of my TV, and it's a 65". And I can't stop laughing. She loves it so I let her crush me once in a while.

Yeah, she sounds like a really good dog =] The best larger dog I had was a Pit Bull named Ginger. She came to me at about 8 years old from my family in San Antonio. I had a cousin living with me while he got his Bachelors degree and I had told him that I had a friend that wanted me to take one of his Dachshunds the was extremely close to me. I came home sometime later that weekend and there was a HUGE PIT BULL IN MY YARD! I was just unlocking the door and this monster appears and I started freaking out LOL Michael came out of his room calming me down saying his parents had to get rid of her because they had a neighborhood regulation... no Pits. She was one of the best and smartest, most loving monsters I ever owned =] I'd go visit relatives and come back with my truck bed filled with meat and I fed her wild hog carcasses. The neighbors were terrified seeing her gnaw on these 2' - 3' rib cages LOL But... when she got older she got startled by sounds and her eyes were bad, her hips were bad every winter and I kept rubbing ointment on them and keeping her in tube socks LOL Well, I had some tumors removed on her and since her entire litter died horrible lingering deaths from cancer, when it got into her throat there was nothing I could do to save her.

Anyway, she was a good dog =] Not a lover, but a really gentle and kind dog... she's the only dog I have ever seen chase squirrels around a 1 acre lot and catch the mudders... She killed a lot of squirrels, unfortunately. She'd leave them on my welcome mat even she could have brought them in the house by doggie door :/

#4 Sounds like Bella is an amazing dog, and great job rescuing her from the shelter. I wish more people would adopt shelter animals, instead of buying overpriced "purebred" dogs. So many sweet, wonderful animals never get a home. Its heart breaking.

I can totally picture Bella suffocating you while joyfully wagging her tail.

I have had both, pound pups, rescued pups, cast off pups, and pure bred from a breeder. Some I loved deeply, some had been rescues and all I could do is give them shelter, safety, and care for them for the time they had left... I got 2 Rat Terriers from a rescue... mother and daughter, bred to death... the most skittish and scared dogs I'd ever seen. You couldn't put a bowl of water or food down because they would defecate or urinate in it... it didn't matter if they were in a 3 bedroom house or on a half acre yard.... it's like they were trained to do it... Phewwww, I must have had them 7 years ? around that long... They were as wild as could be, terrified of men, but when I went out in the back yard, those two spotted freaks would come running =] I had to give them shots and do their nails myself since they'd mess all over my vet each time I tried to take them... He said just keep them fed/watered and up to date and let them be free from the cage they were raised in... I don't even remember their names... I just remember they had a metal feeder almost a foot off of the ground and they shat under it LOL

The older one, the mother... I remember her getting into it with a raccoon one night... the daughter was like 5 pounds, a little bitty rat terrier, but the mother was regular sized... 10-15 pounds <?> After all of the lights were on and my husband and I were there the raccoon was COVERED IN POO and GETTING THE H. E. dubya L out of that yard! LOL

I'm sorry. My son's wife gave him a blue nose pit 6 week old puppy for Christmas. So cute, Bella mothered it when he came over. It's name is Captain, and he's huge now, not Bella huge, but huge, and very sweet and smart.
When I lost Stewy my Fox Terrier I decided to not get another dog until I was old enough that my next dog would out live me. Then 2 years later I fall in love with Bella. Pyr's don't live long, cancer usually takes them at 7-9 years old. I didn't want a dog, I just wanted to see them, the bigger the better. As soon as I went to the rescue Bella picked me out, she wouldn't let the other Pyr's near me and they were 170lb males(she was the smallest dog). She went and got her ball and kept putting it in my hand until I threw it (Pyr's don't usually play ball) and I've always had male dogs, never wanted a girl dog in my life. Needless to say that weekend I got my house and yard ready for the inspection and Bella moved in Monday. I'm not looking forward to the heartbreak again. After Bella, NO MORE DOGS!!!!

That made me laugh. I can totally picture that. It makes me feel really bad the way some people abuse and neglect their dogs. Its like as soon as the novelty wears off, they are relegated to the value of trash. If a person isn't willing to dedicate he next 10-15 years of their life to that animal, maybe they should just stick to fish.

I believe in shelter dogs but I always get pure breds. Mixed dogs are great but I always know what I'm going to end up with if I get a pure bred pup. A friend got the cutest puppy at the pound that grew into the ugliest dog and he runs marathons so he was hoping to jog with the dog. It grew up to have a shepherds body on dachsunds legs. Still a great dog but no running companion.LOL. If I get a mix it's got to be at least almost adult. Adult dogs get put down if not adopted fast.

Chat time, then bedtime, 20 hours since I had 4 hours of sleep. And I need to be up in 4 hours, so...
I haven't been without at least one dog in over 32 years. I've never paid for one, other than adoption/donation fees. I found half of them. I actually saw somebody throw my last dog out of a car when he was 6 weeks old. Great dog, and happened to be the official state dog breed. I had him until he died at 16 years old.
My current dog and avatar was 'on sale' at the ASPCA shelter for $20. I got him 1-2-2013, and he's half Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog (exact body type, but shorter nose on mine), and half Shar Pei, I think (coat coloring, folds in the skin, and a purple tongue). He had been there over a month after being transferred from another shelter, no idea how long he had been there. Only 3 years old, and didn't know 'sit' from lick my face or poo on the floor. He wouldn't touch a toy for weeks. Now he's house broken, will fetch anything, sit, lie down, come here, shake (paw), and I'm still working on stay, but he's like Velcro unless I throw a toy. He's happy to run all day, or sit and stare at nature, pretty much happy all the time. He even watches TV, especially if there are animals on it. I couldn't ask for more, except maybe better breath and less shedding in the early spring. He never got cold in the winter even when wet, so I was expecting a lot of fur to come off. He's a dog, it comes with the territory.

I'll be back to play this game later. TTFN!

True... I think the same should be said of children. I don't want to be 'regulated', but I would like nothing more than to 'regulate' those who let another suffer from their stupidity. Emmy was a hot mess when I got her. She bit the HECK out of me when I touched her - all because she was a matted mess, nails so long that after 2 months I am just able to touch them without her freaking out. The vet did them for me at first because she was hobbling. Anyway, she's a smart little dog =] Makes me so happy when she minds or comes up to lick my hand =] I try not to talk ill of her previous family, but they got the best years, her puppy years, and then they dumped her on Craigslist when they tired of her. But I love that monkey faced little dog =]

1 Good morning!! We at airport. Waving goodbye to Texas:) There used to be tons of rocking chairs outside hobby airport and they are now gone. Sad sad day.

I hope you had a good visit =] Be safe and report in when you two land back in the Big Apple!

Good looking pup you have there =] Shar Pei though! Wow! I would have thought Chow before Shar Pei! But from your descriptions, it could be... you never know what business they get up to LOL

Emmy's a little dog and not one for games... she terrorizes her little noisy toys, she has 'let's go this way' perfected, and when in the car, 'sit' is quickly obeyed =] Stay, come, fetch... not happening LOL She loves chasing balls or frisbees... but once she gets them, she leaves them laying :p That's okay though, it's enough for me and really I need the exercise of throwing and fetching more than she does! LMAO! And sometimes... I see her moodiness come into play... that stink-eyed look of disgust or stubbornness LOL Then my neighbors watch me discuss the situation with the little dog named Emmy LOL

"I am the boss"
"You do what I say"
"Don't make me pull you across the grass like a mutt"

and then my voice changes and she trots her hiney where I say LOL Two ex-husbands, four step-children, 3 grandkids, plus about 50 kids from other family members in all ... Yeah, I got the voice down... for my dog, the ex-husbands, their kids, their ex-ex-wives, and a whole mess more children of my 'friends' that somehow became family LOL

Bella will do tricks but she hates to. I think she's insulted that I would make her do something for a treat. When I point my finger at her and say bang she gives me this look that says, just put the dmn biscuit down and you go lie on the couch and play dead. If I wait she slowly lays down then on her side. She's so disgusted she lays there like it was her idea and won't take the biscuit till I put it on the floor and walk away.

DOGGIES!!!! We live in the city without a fenced yard so no dog for us right now, but I always had them growing up... My parents currently have a Great Pyrenees / Newfoundland mix named Poppy. She's 5 has has a freakishly strong herding instinct. The only person she doesn't try to get back into the herd is my mother, and then only when mom's cooking! Before Poppy was Kostas: his dad was a mastiff/great dane and his mom was a boxer/chow. Big dog, big chest, massive head, purple spotted tongue, and gentle as could be. There's video of a 2 year old reaching into his mouth to pull out a toy!
