Im running a Tobeco Mini Pro tank with a Tesla Two - 100W 4000mah unregulated box mod and when I vape it tastes like electricity all in my mouth. I've searched and found where lips have been shocked but not the throat. It also shocks the tip of my tongue and just my whole mouth in general.

I've had the Pro tank for about a week and a half it worked great. I changed the coil and I'm not sure how long it took but it eventually had a shock-taste to it. I went to the vape shop and they put in a new coil, claiming the coil was defective. It worked for 3 hours then again, shock taste. Took it back to the vape shop and they claim it's my nic content. They put a new tank of 12 mg - I was running 18, and it tasted fine for 20ish vapes and then it went back to more of the same.

The only thing I ca think of is some of the liquid might have gotten down in the base of the tank where the coil screws in, which is causing some sort of a short. Thoughts?

Juice is non-conductive....
If it was when ever you dripped or put juice in a tank you would create a short

Hi and welcome.

E-liquid is non-conductive. Could be a lot of things though. A PG or VG sensitivity, could also be the nicotine giving you that tingly taste. I would like to think that the regulated mod you are using wouldn't allow it to fire if there was a short. Most of those have built in protections for shorts. Might be even a tank made from sub-standard metals giving you that taste.

I'm only speculating here on all these things. I would try switching mods with different atomizers though just to rule it out.

Try a plastic drip tip or even put tape on it temporarily, if a shock that should stop it instantly. Your description sounds very subjective and odd.

I can't find a Tobeco mini-protank but that's a big battery unit for a Kanger Protank or equal. The original protank 1 and 2's are best run about about 6 watts and the PT 3 with most of its coils no more than 12 W. Are you getting a burning taste? ... if the shop is changing out coils... unfortunately most shops have no one that run these tanks or know much about them.

if liquid gets down in the electronics I suppose all manner of uncomfortable things could happen.

the protanks are older style toppers and liquid can leak down.
if you get the miniaerotank base for it then the airflow should go off to the side .... I think?

I wouldn't use those older types of tanks on a high wattage mod; I'd use something where there's no chance of liquid leaking down to that 510 centerpin.

I know what an electric shock feels like, although I have never experienced it while vaping. I've done it before when putting in some ceiling fans without switching off the mains power. And I've done it when pulling out a plug before from the wall socket. I doubt it felt like that or you would surely drop your mod. I'm guessing its more like putting your tongue on a 9V battery? Regardless, you should get a different mod. The mass produced Chinese stuff like the gear you are using has a higher chance of having manufacturing issues.

Follow up the only tank I can find like you said is the Mini Super Tank by Tobeco which shows .2 or .5 coils. If using a .5 coil fully charged on that unregulated box would be around 800 watts at 40amps. Unless I miscalculated. but a dual box like that shows a cutoff of 100 watts. Given what I'm guessing, you are hitting that tank at around 100 watts and that tank can't handle it. Get a cheap regulated and I bet you will be fine.

Can someone confirm/deny this as I have had a few drinks lol.

Edit : yes I know you couldn't run that many watts as the voltage wouldn't be there but it just really shows my point lol.

Thats not how an unregulated mod works. It essentially works like a mech mod, except this one is supposed to have built in protection. The fully charged batteries are going to put out 4.2 volt. Using ohms law, with a .5 ohm coil, the mod will put out about 35 watts at theoretical best (it won't actually be this high due to voltage drop). This is what unregulated means. There is no adjustment. To hit the 100 watt cutoff, you would need a coil below .17 ohm.

But regardless, the issue is that the mod is defective. This is not uncommon for cheap Chinese clones. But thing should not shock you. Something is wrong with the circuitry. If OP wants unregulated, a simple mech mod (no wires) would be better, especially if sticking with budget gear from China.

Thanks for all the quick replies.
My tank is a Tobeco Mini Super Tank with a .2 coil. Like I said before, it worked great for a week or so, I used it all the time, now it tastes funny. Kind of like I'm sucking on a dull 9V. I know it's not just me, the guys at the shop hit it and had equally unpleasant experiences. According to the shop this is their most popular set up right now and they haven't heard of this issue from anyone else.

I have been the recipient of the hot nic splatter and that's not it. That's a more localized pain rather than this metallic aluminum taste all over my mouth that I've been experiencing recently.

I have tried different tanks on top of my box mod, testers at the shop, and they taste fine but have no nic in the liquid. I have not tried a different mod with my tank. My mod isn't adjustable as was previously stated, that could make a difference.

It seems the most common answer is that my tank can't handle the power of mod. It might have crapped out after a week of use, who knows.

The other possibility is a PG/VG sensitivity. I'll look in to that but the only reason why I'm hesitant to think that's the problem is the guys at the shop had the same issue I did. I made sure they tried it so I would know I wasn't crazy. Also I don't get that same taste when I hit on testers.

Another possibility is maybe a nicotine sensitivity but I'd doubt it I'm a 20yr smoker of a pack+ a day. It does sometimes feel like a coating of electrical-bengay in my mouth, other times it has a stinging characteristic to it on the tip of my tongue (like a nic splat) or in the back of my throat.

I have a .5 coil that came with the tank. I'm thinking I'll try switching to that to see if there's any difference. Who knows I might have gotten two defective could in a row, although the coil passed a visual inspection by the shop tech. My old (second coil - the first was fine) did have a burn mark but even now on the third coil I'm having the same issue.

Thanks again for all the help

i say shock but it doesn't shock my lips just my mouth/throat. It's akin to biting a lemon or eating really sour candy with a metallic taste, which is why it tastes like it's shocking me. At times its been a sharper 'shock' than others. With the second coil it felt drinking orange juice with an aluminum foil tongue when I'd hit it. Since that coil was replaced, it still tastes that way but not as strong.
