Hello, I was wondering......we know that smoking can cause male infertility but is that because the nicotine or because the other chemicals in cigarettes? I have recently lost over 100 lbs and now I am cig free for a month and we are trying to have a child. I was wondering if vaping would still hinder me trying to make a baby. I am 42 years old and have never been able to have a child and I think it was directly related to my lifestyle such as drugs, smoking, weight and so on. I have turned my life around and have been healthy for a while now. I haven't done drugs in around 10 years now, this last year I lost over 100 lbs and I have now quit smoking and only vape (heavy) and I eat right. I was wondering, I know my chances have improved but what about the vaping? I know there are not enough studies so far but if anyone would have some insight on this I would appreciate it.....Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

I don't know the answer to your question, but wanted to commend you on a job well done getting a healthier lifestyle! i did the same thing about 2.5 years ago, and still can't believe how amazing I feel after changing my way of life. Props!
At one time Saltpeter (SP?) was used in cigarettes, not sure if it still is.
You should have yourself and your wife checked by a doctor. I can guaranty that although smoking has "Some" affect on male fertility it did not stop people that smoked from having children. If It had, more than likely I would not be here nor would over half the people on the face of this planet.

Ok, the first thing to know is that you're probably not going to be able to get a definitive answer to this question based on good scientific research for a very long time. Right now, the scientists are still trying to figure out if e-cigs are going to kill us. They won't get to studying fertility for several years (if vaping is still legal that long).
However, here's what I think. I'm not a scientist or a doctor, just a vaper who's done a pretty fair amount of research. This is not medical advice, just some guy's opinion on the internet.
Tobacco smoke contains a deadly mix of more than 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds are toxic. About 70 can cause cancer. Many of these come into existence through combustion - i.e. burning causes a lot of them. E-liquid, on the other hand, contains 4 ingredients, nicotine, and 3 others that are general regarded as safe for human consumption and approved by the FDA. These things are commonly used in inhalers and all sorts of other products we use every day (medicines, toothpaste, etc.). They are not burned, but heated until they become steam.
The vast majority of the chemicals in a cigarette are MUCH worse than anything in e-juice, and I would be willing to bet that the fertility issues from smoking come from one (or a combination) of those 7,000 chemicals, not from one of the 3 that are generally regarded as safe. There's a possibility that they could be caused by nicotine, but it seems to me that the odds are against it.
Some studies have shown results that nicotine impairs fertility, but the ones I've found seem to use "nicotine" as another word for smoking. They don't appear to have isolated nicotine and tested it alone, but instead tested people using cigarettes.
That said again, I could be totally wrong here. Don't take my word as gospel - do some digging and come to your own conclusions.

Thank you, I have done a lot of research on E cigs and read a lot out there too and I feel so much safer doing this than smoking.....I would guess that no matter what im doing 100% better than I was. Thank you all for the compliments on my new health, it really is a game changer for me, I love life now and im about to get married to a girl 9 years younger than I am lol......love it, love her. Anyway thank you all for your imput......hopefully we will get lucky. Maybe ill try to get some insurance and see a doctor, we know she can have kids but im the one that's ify.
Novamatt, would they really make vaping illegal? If so what the hell are we going to do? Ive finally found this and was able to get off cigs but if they take away vaping im screwed lol. Will there be like an underground or something, will I still be able to get supplies? Ugh , I don't want to think about it, I love this ........
I mean, they sold that synthetic stuff or spice or whatever you call it at some places that gets you high, I know they have been making it illegal too but they had it out for a long time for anyone to buy and that crap was dangerous. This is freakin healthier and its doing more good than harm, is it just that the government is making so much money on tax for cigs that they don't want to lose that money or something.....or will they just start taxing the hell out of this stuff and changing it and corrupting the juice and stuff? I don't know......I would like it to just stay as it is now......government stay out of it.

What that means is that they will be regulated just like cigarettes are. It would take effect in 2 years. Sounds like it's not a problem, but if this regulation goes through, it most certainly will be. Part of the rules indicate that any product that wasn't on the market in 2007 will require FDA approval and licensing to sell after the 2 years is up. It will cost over a million dollars per product to gather all of the proper information and file a single application. For an e-juice maker, that will mean a separate license for each nic strength and size of each flavor. So if you make one flavor, and you sell it in 0mg, 6mg, 12mg, and 18mg, and you sell 15ml, 30ml, and 50ml sizes, you'll need 12 licenses for that flavor of juice. I don't know of a single vendor who will be able to afford that many applications, and there's no guarantee the FDA will approve them.
So this regulation, if passed, will put all of our juice makers out of business. There are only 3 or 4 companies I can think of who have the money for the licensing AND the knowledge to walk it through the system correctly to get approved. Want to guess who those are? I'll give you a hint - they're the ones who have been doing it for years with cigarettes. So the regs will effectively hand the whole e-cig industry over to big tobacco. Big tobacco hates e-cigs because they're losing smokers and losing money, but they do own a few of the e-cig companies (all really low end products like Blu).
If we can't stop the FDA from implementing this, I foresee a future where cheap cartridge based cig-a-likes at inflated prices are the only thing available to us.
Want to do your part to help keep this from happening? Go to CASAA.org, sign up, make sure they have your state and email address, and then read their emails and do what they ask. CASAA is a non-profit consumer organization representing all of us, the vapers. Their goals are to keep our vaping gear and supplies available to us. They'll let you know when there's something you can do to help keep our vape stuff safe.

Hi Kanefer, congrats on making the change in lifestyle! I know how hard it is from personal experience and not many people get to make the 180 degree change for the better.
As far as fertility or the ability to have children, your best bet and the appropriate course of action is to get yourself and wife/gf checked to see what the problem is. There are many factors that can contribute to infertility and knowing the cause is the best way to target the problem. Sometimes, if this is the first pregnancy, it just takes time for the human body to adjust. Not a doctor, but reading your post brought back memories in many different levels and I can relate....

first of all thank you.......ok so heres the jist, I was married before and we tried to no avail, also went to the doctor to have her filopian tubes blown out which the doctor said that usually works.....it didn't, we didn't get to test me though since we divorced. Shortly after that she got with someone and became pregnant...twice lol. I remarried to someone else.....no luck there either.....could of been a combination of a lot of bad habbits tho also. Ive been with 2 women for most of my life and im 42 years old and never used protection because we were trying to have babies. Now with my fiancé she works as a vet tech and has the opportunity to use doctors equipment (as in counting sperm for inseminating pets....) she took a sample of mine in and it came back very low. I figured it was me with the problem because she also has a 10 year old. Ive never been even close at getting a girl pregnant. I know its me. I do want to go to a fertility specialist tho but we do not have ins and most likely not going to be able to do it for a while. I have been getting healthy tho just in case of course with the weight and the smoking and of course getting of drugs over 10 years now and eating as healthy as I can now. We will see if it makes a difference I hope. Either way, I am healthy now tho and that's cool too lol. So out of three girls (2 exes) and the one om with now who have all had children by someone else and I have had none since I was 18.....ok maybe a little younger but shhhh lol....anyway, im pretty much 100% sure its me.....maybe someday I can figure out if theres something I can do about it but im getting up there in age and thinking I need to hurry up haha. I am hoping it was the smoking and that moving to vaping will help.

I seriously doubt it. Some people can have children and other can't. You seem to be one that can't I'm sorry to say. Such is life.

Then again, I personally know quite a few couples who were never able to conceive, and neither party ever smoked (or drank or used "other" things). And I know many couples who smoked and had multiple children. So, I think maybe it's a crap shoot.

Hi and congratulations on your new life style. I hope you don't mind me making a suggestion. I suggest you and your partner get your fertility tested. This way you can find out without a shadow of a doubt who has the problem and exactly where the problem lies with fertility. This is really the best thing to do if you are serious about conceiving a child. Also, i hope this does not offend in any way because this is not my intent but if their is a fertility issue with you or your partner have you considered adoption? I know their are many children who are in desperate need of loving parents and this might be something to consider. So if you do find a problem with either you or your partner do not think you can never be a parent, adoption is a wonderful option to give a child in need a family. I hope this helps. Actually I have thought about adoption and it is an option for us.....when I was younger I thought that I never could but as I get older I feel that my mind has changed on that issue. So if we cant have children naturally we are totally open to it. Of course we will explore all avenues and get tested for sure first.,...even look into invetro but I know its a lot of money for that with no guarantee it works so, adoption might be in the future for us.
Invitro is not the solution for your problem. Your problem can be resolved at a very low cost. By all means, wait until you are ready, then see a doctor. Adoption, of course, is no longer the easiest, unless you want an older/special need child.
And I agree with you on quitting smoking. Any improvement in health is going to improve the health of those little tadpoles.
