So true. When I started, just seeing someone smoking on TV didn't mean they were automatically the bad guy. :D Johnny Carson still smoked on TV then, and of course Ed too, and if Dean Martin happened by, he'd certainly have a smoke in his hand, and probably a martini glass in the other. :D

Of course we all knew The Cigarette Smoking Man was a really bad guy, on X-Files... had to be... he was always smoking. :D

I don't have children, however I do teach high school aged children in China. I never ever let them see me using my Aspire Atlantii. I would treat the issue the same were I back home in America the same however. I smoked since I was a freshman in high school because I saw others doing it and it seemed like the "cool" thing to do. Ultimately I just don't want to be a factor in that kind of decision for someone else. Also when I did smoke I would never smoke in my house and never ever in my car. The thought of doing so makes my skin crawl. I can say that here in China I get enough stares and strange looks just being caucasian so I don't want to bring even more attention to me.

Maybe I'm strange, but the Greek study showed that second hand vapor is nearly harmless. When it comes to being fearful of children imitating you do you not drink, speed, over eat or anything else naughty? We all pick our battles, I choose to vape around my son and tell him what he wants to know, so that way he doesn't think its a naughty thing that I'm trying to hide from him.

From the kids' perspective -

I guess I was a bit of a rebel kid. The more forbidden something was, the more curious I was about it.

Drinking was allowed in my family, even for the kids (at home only). There was always beer in the fridge, and sometimes there was wine or hard liquor. Us kids were allowed to have a drink any time we wanted, as long as we stayed home with it. I can't remember how old I was the first time I drank, but I know I was young (maybe 7 or 8). Over the years I had a few drinks, got tipsy a time or two. I took care of my brother when he got seriously drunk at the age of 11 or so and my parents weren't home.

As an adult, I have never been a serious drinker. I drink occasionally, and it's extremely rare that I have more than one or two. I can probably count my "drunk nights" on my fingers, no need for toes. All of my siblings are the same as me when it comes to alcohol.

Smoking was absolutely forbidden in my family. All of us kids became smokers.

I raised my daughter the same way, but I smoked whereas my parents didn't.

She got drunk at home a few times as a teenager, but never became a regular or serious drinker.

I still didn't want her to smoke, and told her how addictive it was for me and how I wished I could quit. But I wasn't as prohibitive as my parents were. I only told her that I wouldn't pay for her cigs. She started smoking at 16 when she started working part time jobs. She still smokes, although I gave her some evods and juices and she has been toying with them.

If she were a child now, I think I would start GIVING her vape gear and juice the minute she showed an interest in smoking. I think the chances are good that after trying both, she would have vaped instead of smoking, mostly because after vaping, a cig would just taste so nasty it would lose its appeal. Vaping tastes awesome.

Your kids may be different -- I think certain kids are more predisposed to smoking, and those are the ones that should be steered toward vaping instead.

My 2 cents. YMMV.

The first time I went to my local vape shop I saw a newborn baby there sleeping while there parents were vaping at the bar. The place was a big cloud of vapor. I know that it's suppose to be harmless for second hand but do we really know for sure? I do vape around other adults who do not smoke or vape but I would never vape around a baby. I was actually offended when I saw the newborn there. The place was one big cloud.

We vape around our kids. When we smoked, we didn't smoke in the house but otherwise lit up around the kids all the time. And neither of the older kids - 18 and 20 now - have ever touched a cigarette. The 7 year old is fascinated with it though so we make a point that we vape only to be healthier and quit smoking and that you don't need it if you didn't smoke. That's working right now. We'll see how she is in a few years. If she started smoking as a teen, I would definitely direct her to vaping. I started at 15. I'm 45 and it's taken many attempts to quit to get this far.

I never have more than 1 drink unless my child is going to bed within the hour. (Will be in bed before the alcohol kicks in)
I NEVER excessively speed with my child in the car. (5-10mph over the limit is just how everyone in Texas drives. You've got to do that just to keep up with the flow of traffic)
At 46 years old I'm 6 foot and 175lbs. Obviously I don't overeat, and I'm very physically active.

I can honestly say I do my very best to avoid doing anything "naughty" in front of my daughter. That includes vaping, which as I've already said, at 13 she is VERY interested in and has several times asked me what it tastes like. I have no doubts that sooner or later she's going to try it herself, and it will be my fault because I'm the one that is making the house smell so good and yummy with my candy and bakery flavors. (My wife tootle puffs pure methol which has no smell and tastes like rancid mouthwash IMO)

You don't think it will be simply *her* "fault", for being a curious human being?

And I'm trying to see where a "fault" lies, in someone vaping, and cannot see it. If you were abusive to her, and then she became abusive to her own kids, yeah, that would be your "fault". Is it your "fault" if she becomes a loving and caring person? I see no fault in that either, just as I see none in vaping.

But just because a kid learns or becomes familiar with something at home, it does not *necessarily* follow that they will do that themselves. My mother was somewhat abusive to me, but I used her as my pattern of how NOT to raise my own child. I think it worked; my son has always had a very healthy sense of self-esteem, so I didn't manage to (s)mother it out of him, as my own did to me.

Here's another old timer checking in. When my kiddos were home wife and I both smoked in the house around the kiddos. We didn't think anything of it because our parents had done the same thing.

After we had grandkiddos, we wouldn't smoke if there were right there, but we did still smoke in the house if they were gone or in the other room. Wife quit a few years ago completely and I've move to mostly vaping. I vape in the house and the car, but keep it to a minimum if the grandkiddos are around.

I think attitudes have changed a lot over the years. I never did smoke in restaurants or most stores but it was mostly because it just didn't seem like the right place to smoke to me even though I did see others smoking. I think some of the change is because we didn't really know how bad they were for us back then, but some of it is also people are a lot less tolerant of what other people do.

I am going to keep my opinion about all of this to myself even though I do have 2 lovely little boys. I will say that they are the reason I quit smoking and started vaping and they are very happy that I don't smell like smoke anymore. Now to go a little off topic. I hardly ever see anyone reference Xfiles anymore, so I have to geek out a little :) did you know that they are bringing the show back, including the smoking man. Maybe they will convert him to vaping. I could see him doing big lung inhales sounding like Darth Vader. Ok, geek out over
