From the kids' perspective -
I guess I was a bit of a rebel kid. The more forbidden something was, the more curious I was about it.
Drinking was allowed in my family, even for the kids (at home only). There was always beer in the fridge, and sometimes there was wine or hard liquor. Us kids were allowed to have a drink any time we wanted, as long as we stayed home with it. I can't remember how old I was the first time I drank, but I know I was young (maybe 7 or 8). Over the years I had a few drinks, got tipsy a time or two. I took care of my brother when he got seriously drunk at the age of 11 or so and my parents weren't home.
As an adult, I have never been a serious drinker. I drink occasionally, and it's extremely rare that I have more than one or two. I can probably count my "drunk nights" on my fingers, no need for toes. All of my siblings are the same as me when it comes to alcohol.
Smoking was absolutely forbidden in my family. All of us kids became smokers.
I raised my daughter the same way, but I smoked whereas my parents didn't.
She got drunk at home a few times as a teenager, but never became a regular or serious drinker.
I still didn't want her to smoke, and told her how addictive it was for me and how I wished I could quit. But I wasn't as prohibitive as my parents were. I only told her that I wouldn't pay for her cigs. She started smoking at 16 when she started working part time jobs. She still smokes, although I gave her some evods and juices and she has been toying with them.
If she were a child now, I think I would start GIVING her vape gear and juice the minute she showed an interest in smoking. I think the chances are good that after trying both, she would have vaped instead of smoking, mostly because after vaping, a cig would just taste so nasty it would lose its appeal. Vaping tastes awesome.
Your kids may be different -- I think certain kids are more predisposed to smoking, and those are the ones that should be steered toward vaping instead.
My 2 cents. YMMV.
