I have to say that getting my 510 on Wednesday probably saved my life on Thursday.
My wife is a liver transplantee. Though she's had her transplant for 11 years she recently became jaundiced. So after a series of tests on Wednesday it was requested that she come in for a Liver biopsy, among other diagnostic tests, prior to her admission to the hospital Thursday night. If any of y'all ever get involved with a transplantee understand this, those tests make for a REALLY long day. I was up at Baylor for 17 hours on Thursday.
What makes this a pain is that Baylor is not just a non-smoking hospital, it's a non-smoking campus. And it's not just a 1 hospital campus. I've posted a small and incomplete map of the campus below, just so you can get a sense for the scale. Each of the building's shown are between 10-25 stories tall, and to smoke you have to move completely off the property. Not just to the smoking garages but past them, off Baylor's property.
Needless to say, you don't get many opportunities to smoke on a visit to Baylor.
Luckily my 510 had arrived from Altsmoke on Wednesday. I gave 1 battery a full charge and 2 a partial charge before I went, having only the 5 carts of Marlboro juice I received with my 510 to last me.
I have to say vaping in Baylor was one of the coolest moments in my life.
Having a transplantee for a wife I will admit to having spent more than my share of time in hospitals. Beyond the normal trials and tribulations of having a hospitalized spouse, being a smoker just makes these events more painful. You're outright niccing, but you don't want to leave for a smoke because she might need something. You feel like you're abandoning her in her time of need, just so you can hit the evil herb.
Not so this time. After I settled down into her room for the biopsy I broke out the 510 and started puffing. I made a point of vaping directly in front of two nurses and the Doctor giving the procedure and nobody noted anything. While she was having the procedure I went to the Truett Building (from Hoblitzelle) to grab some breakfast from the cafeteria. I vaped on the way there, I vaped in the cafeteria, and I vaped on the way back.
On a side note, Baylor has an outstanding cafeteria. For the love of God, they have a sushi-bar with handrolled sushi, done by professional chefs. Best hospital cafeteria food I've ever had.
After I got back to the room I vaped for 5 hours solid. I vaped in front of a number of nurses, two doctors, and the housekeeping staff. Nobody noted anything, at all, negative.
For the rest of the day I ended up running all over Baylor getting things for the wife, filling out paperwork, etc... I vaped pretty much the entire time. I vaped in Hoblitzelle, Truett, Barnett Tower, Wedley Tower, and Roberts Hospital (the L shaped building on the lower left). I vaped in the basement, on the ground floor, and all the way up to the 14th floor of the Roberts building. I vaped in hallways, in bathrooms, and in elevators. I even vaped in the Transplant wing. About the only place I didn't vape was in the admitting waiting room and when I walked through Maternity.
Throughout the entire day I only had 4 people ask about it.
One was a Doctor, a smoker, who was tired of having to walk off campus to smoke.
One was a Doctor, a non-smoker, who's wife is a chain smoker who hasn't been able to quit.
One was a nurse, a smoker, who thought it would be a great way for some of her smoking patients (and patients families) to reduce their stress levels when they come in for a procedure (and to possibly quit smoking).
The last was a Police Officer, an e-smoker himself, who'd never seen a 510. He had one of those vile little things you buy from the Mall Kiosk, which he'd paid almost $200 for. He loved it, and he'll probably be joining the forum soon.
I have to say that my first day vaping was a very positive experience. I reduced my cigarette intake by over 1/3, was able to pay more attention to my wife by being available for her more often, and kept my own stress level down by not going into nic fits throughout the day.
The bad thing, I'm out of carts and my juice order from last week hasn't arrived yet. I'm going to be up there from today through Monday without my e-cig. *sniffle*
