This may be a strange one but I was wondering if anyone has used vaping to lose weight?

I gave up analogues about 10 years ago (and certainly have no desire to start again - in fact I detest smoking now), long before I knew anything about PVs but unfotunately in giving up smoking I picked up another bad habit. When I am sat in front of the telly in the evenings I snack on sweets/chocolate etc. I know this is just a habit/boredom type thing as it only started when I gave up smoking and I only really do it whilst watching TV in the evenings!

Having just bought a PV for my husband to help him quit after having a heart attack (you would think that would be motivation enough, but apparently not!) I got to thinking that maybe I could get one myself and use it instead of reaching for the sweety snacks!!!

Now I know that although vaping is better than analogues, I don't really want to risk my health at all so i would probably not inhale (although I am probably risking my health with all the sugar I am consuming!!.

I just wondered if anyone else had taken up vaping for this purpose or even if there are non-smokers who have taken up vaping?

I look forward to your comments.

Although you could go sans nic, I wouldn't recommend it personally. Mostly because I have actually found that some of the yummy flavors have the opposite effect on me. My appetite will be triggered, next thing I know, I am scrounging the pantry for a snack. I have also heard others say it squelches their snacking urges... so I guess it varies.

Nicotine is a thermogenic and appetite suppressant (search pubmed.gov) so it will help you in that respects but honestly, without the nic I had no incentive to vape and actually stopped for 2 weeks last month when I ran out of high nic liquid. I would say that vaping WITH nicotine has helped me maintain my weight - without any nicotine I gain 5 lbs rapidly due to both the lack of nic stimulation and appetite suppression.

Nicotine's mood-altering effects are different by report: in particular it is both a stimulant and a relaxant.[26] First causing a release of glucose from the liver and epinephrine (adrenaline) from the adrenal medulla, it causes stimulation. Users report feelings of relaxation, sharpness, calmness, and alertness.[27] By reducing the appetite and raising the metabolism, some smokers may lose weight as a consequence.[28][29]

Taken from: Nicotine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia under "Psychoactive effects"

The effects of Nicotine on the Human Body:

Side_effects_of_nicotine.png

Technically, nicotine is not significantly addictive, as nicotine administered alone does not produce significant reinforcing properties.[36] However, only after coadministration with an MAOI, such as those found in tobacco, nicotine produces significant behavioral sensitization, a measure of addiction potential. This is similar in effect to amphetamine.

Taken from same article on wiki

I find this funny since we technically loose the MAOI effect from smoking when we switch to vaping, but people still find themselfs 'addicted' to nicotine.

Question is which one is really worse for you in the long run; sweet snacks or nicotine?

Hi

I am not talking about getting myself hooked on nicotine again!! I would be using ZERO nicotine liquids!!

The appetite suppressant effect of nicotine is again, irrelevant. My reasons for snacking in the evenings is through boredom/something to do with my hands/mouth so this is why I am thinking that vaping would satisfy my munching!!

Just to clarify, I am NOT going to use nicotine liquids - there is no logical reason for this seeing as I have been a non-snoker for over 10 years, I will not even be inhaling.
I just think vaping will give me 'something to do' instead of snacking!!

Not even too bothered about the actual weight loss, more that I don't want to put any more on!!

Thanks

I don't think any of us wants to encourage someone to start up a habit, even without nicotine. There's always the possibility you'd enjoy vaping so much that you'd be curious what the nic juice tastes like and then find yourself creating an addiction cycle all over again. So be cautious about it in that respect.

Aside from that, I don't see why it would hurt to give it a try. The hand-to-mouth ritual is one of the reasons many people gain weight when they quit smoking. Vaping seems to reduce the occurrence of weight gain. So even though you're years removed from the smoking ritual, you're probably snacking at least somewhat out of habit now.

The hand-to-mouth activity of vaping certainly has the potential to help you snack less. Or it might not help at all. But if you don't mind shelling out a little cash for an ecig and some zero nic liquid, then it's probably worth a shot. Let us know how it works out if you do try it.

if you are not smoking now, i really think vaping would be a bad move. using vaping to replace a bad eating habit is just wrong! for those of us who are/were smokers, vaping is an alternative, which fortunately allows many of us to quit smoking altogether. it is not yet proven to be a safe alternative, so we are just taking our chances and hoping like hell that what we are doing must surely be better than inhaling 4000 odd chemicals each time we light a fire stick. you, on the other hand are only over eating. not to say this is a healthy pastime, it's not. but.... it is in no way as dangerous as smoking. if you are unable to watch tv without doing something with your hands, take up a hobby such as knitting, crochet, sewing etc. if not, consider having healthy snacks instead of junk. i really don't see vaping as something someone should just take up out of the blue. hat would be like a non smoker deciding she'd take up smoking in order to stop eating. just wrong!
those are my thoughts at least.

Even with zero nicotine juice, you'd still be going back to the psychological addiction of holding something resembling a cigarette and bringing it to your mouth.

You made it this far...don't jeopardize it. You could use sugar-free gum if you want flavor and something to do with your mouth. Or you know what's really good and only 100 calories... pringles honey butter stix Pringles: Products — Stix

Wow.... so much judgment....

OP, Though I can see why you would think that vaping might be a solution that you are seeking as far as the hand to mouth effect, I personally dont believe that this is the answer.

While you are watching TV, have you thought about doing exercises? It has been proven that exercising helps greatly with hunger pain/snacking. A few simple ones would do fine such as:
Leg Shimmy- Place your back against the base of the couch. Make sure that your back is straight, and that your bottom wont go anywhere. Stretch your legs out, with your toes pointed. Move the knees up and down. Not the entire legs... just the knees.

Leg Curls - While on your stomach, place your head in your hands on propped elbows. Stretch your legs out behind you with toes pointed. Slowly lift one leg up.... now bend your leg back like you are trying to touch the back of your head. Slowly straighten the leg and lower it down. Repeat with the other leg. Continue to do this for about a good 5-10 mins. The longer you lift, bend, and straighten, the tighter your legs and bum will get.

Planks - This one is a wee bit harder. While propped up on your elbows (dont put your head in your hands for this one :D ) Balance yourself on your toes and elbows. Think of yourself as a plank of wood. Hold the position for 30 seconds.
Move to your side. with you now being propped up on one elbow (you can have the forearm on the floor and the other hand for balance though it is good to after a while not need the hand) and the side of one foot. Lift your hips towards the ceiling till your spine is straight. Hold for 30 seconds then relax. Repeat with other side.

The Dog - On Hands and knees lift one leg kept bent straight out to your side. Repeat this 10 times, then do the other leg. Think of how a dog hykes his leg to pee on a hydrant.

I hope that these few exercises will be able to help you curb your cravings :)
A few other things that will help as well.
LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER! Water is known to be a natural appetite suppressant, and it is good for your body and mind.
Coconut oil (you can pick this up at GNC) It is a natural thermogenic, and it will burn fat. It is easier for the body to digest as well. It is also naturally antibacterial and antiviral. This means it can be used for cuts, scrapes, and even blemishes on the face. (I use it all the time and I have oily combination skin ;) )

If you have any other questions please feel free to PM me dear :)

Trust me, I have had 10 years to try everything to break my snacking habit!! Nothing works for me!
I have even considered going back to smoking, not because I want to smoke but because I want to stop snacking (how irrational is that? But hey, the choice to smoke is probably not rational anyway!)

The points about the health risks do obviously concern me which is why I thought it would be best not to inhale!

My theory is, that if I get some nice flavours I will be satisfying the habit and the sweety tooth all in one.

Some really good points raised though, so thankyou for the responses - the jury is till out ATM!!

Well, I started vaping after smoking heavily for a little over a year and quit smoking easily in favor of vaping. It wasn't my GOAL, but I have cut down a LOT on my snacking (even compared to analogues) because I just ALWAYS have my PV in my hand and I do think the nicotine (which wouldn't be an aspect for you, I hear you) has suppressed my appetite. I haven't LOST any weight yet (2 months) but that's because I can't kick my soda habit, I think. I'm working on that now.

Again, it does seem irresponsible to advocate one bad habit to replace another, but given the risks/known outcomes of obesity (the end result of over-eating, etc.) just like the known outcomes of smoking tobacco (cancer, etc), if it were me I could see your point in wanting something to DO in vaping besides snacking. You are an adult, you can consider your own risks, and therefore I say go for it if you want to try. With all the yummy flavors out there, who's to say vaping won't one day be used as a weight loss aid anyway?! (Why not, everything ELSE is marketed that way!)

If you are a compulsive eater like I am, then I completely understand how it is very very hard to just NOT eat out of boredom/ritual/etc. America's current statistics prove that this is deadly. In fact, don't more people right now die of obesity related illnesses than smoking related illnesses in the US? That's because a lot of people have realized fully the dangers of smoking (even those who DO it) and yet we are still trying to ignore the risks of obesity...

Just my 2 cents... ;)

I have actually gained weight since I started vaping! And I vape 24mg!

I would really advice against it, inhaling anything into your lungs is dangerous--the lungs want oxygen, not water vapor.

I think this is the problem everyone has with ecigs, people who successfully quit, will start up again thinking it is safe, we have no way of knowing if it is safe and what it could cause 10 years from now!

When you find the urge to eat, drink lots and lots of water, 1-it is an appetite suppressant, and it helps you loose a couple pounds if you dont drink enough of it already

Try chewing gum or candies to suck on. If exercise just isn't happening, talk a walk around the block once a day. It does wonders for your state of mind and gets the body moving. And remember, decrease that portion size, and focus on taking a 10-15 min walk once or every other day.

I would deff advice against it. You have been successful in quitting smoking. If you can quit smoking, you can quit that eating habit--but it will take work.

Accept yourself, you are a wonderful person just as you are now.

I started vaping for exactly this reason

I gave up smoking in April, put on 35lbs

I started vaping 2 and a bit months ago and I have lost 23lbs

I use 18mg Menthol juice

I haven't even read the rest of the replies but I'm guessing most will be telling you not to do it
Yet they are happy to extol the virtues and say how its not harmful in other arguments

All I know is that I have .53kg to loose and I will move from Obese to merely Overweight (according to my Wii)

The only thing I have done is start vaping, I haven't had to make any conscious decision to stop eating junk, I just don't.

In the evening I am happy to vap away

I feel healthier than I did 2 months ago, my body no longer gets in the way of itself, I have more energy, and I am in a better mood

Vaping helps me deal with lifes day to day crap, the same as smoking used to

Whatever you choose to do, good luck,

I know what I intend to continue doing

Glenn

Thanks Glenn for your very honest reply. I must admit, I was wavering a bit about going for it but having read your post I am starting to think again that maybe it will be a good (well maybe not good, but justifiable) idea!!

I must just clarify, I am not intending to inhale so I am thinking this should alleviate any health fears (other than possibly oral disease/cancer??!!!?) but as someone else pointed out, the health risks of being overweight are great and yes, obesity is now the biggest killer, even bigger than smoking.

I can tell you honestly that vaping is the best move I've made in a long time.

Had I carried on the way I was going, I would have got bigger, and bigger, etc.

So far as I'm concerned being overweight is more dangerous than smoking, because being overweight "Always" causes health risks, but smoking is a bit of a gamble, some people simply get away with smoking and live a very long life, the same is not true of being obese.

Make no mistake, I am a nicotine addict, but Im happy to be so, I like how nicotine makes me feel and I like the effects it has on me, including stopping me stuff my face all night.

Thankfully I can afford my habit, and so far as Im aware, there are "NO KNOWN" proven health risks. There may very well be, only time will tell.

But hey, I have done lots of stuff with risks, I like cream cakes and sausage rolls, I exceed the speed limit, I drink to excess on occasion, I swear when the need arises, I've swallowed bubble gum, and pulled a funny face just as the wind was changing.

We all have vices and if it were possible to be perfect and make all the right choices, life wouldn't be so interesting.

As for the post about exercising, get real, thats about as useful as telling someone in a bad mood to smile, or telling someone who smokes to just chew gum instead. A hellava lot easier said than done.

I vap and I like it

I would go so far as to say that vaping without getting the nicotine in your system seems pretty pointless though, but again, Im a nicotine addict so I would say that wouldn't I

I know Im likely to get flamed, but this is how I feel, and this is the internet after all
