Vaping is too new for any long term studies. The earliest US studies have been proven to be flawed or biased for numerous reasons.

The better, unbiased studies lately have been coming from the UK. Current wisdom is that vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking. No smoke = no cancer or no COPD. Nicotine use without smoke is no more harmful than using caffeine.

When reviewing a study, consider the source (sponsor). Big Tobacco and Big Pharma fund studies that are biased and/or flawed to fit an agenda. They have a lot to lose and a lot to gain if they can destroy the vaping industry with propaganda.

The things I've read lead me to concur with Izan, Baditude and Bombastinator. Most of the cigarette risks come from inhaling combustion products - ash, tar and carbon monoxide. Vaping doesn't involve combustion, so the big risks aren't there.

As to what risk there is, if there were any major short-term risks from vaping we'd know it by now. We know less about long-term risks. We do know that the ash, tar and CO aren't there, but it's possible that there's some (almost certainly much smaller) risk from what there is. It really comes down to the rubric that it's better not to vape than to vape, but it's also much better to vape than to smoke.

Nicotine doesn't seem to be a major risk factor barring a few circulatory conditions. If I recall correctly, it's also a problem if you happen to remove a finger and want to surgically reattach it.

Vaping allowed me to finally quit buying cigarettes. Vaping also restored my ability to breath freely (compared to smoking), allowing me to increase my exercise routine without huffing and puffing. My lungs look normal in a chest X-ray with the exception of a tiny white spot that my doctor says is scar tissue from a lung infection of long ago.

According to the health forums my lungs should be approaching the same health range as a non-smoker almost 10 years away from my last cigarette.

Hello and welcome.

No idea about long term stuff, but I feel quite a bit better than I did 2 or 3 years ago.

Except for a short period during the Georgia pollen season each year, my lungs are free and clear. I no longer get a nasty cold yearly like I did when I smoked.

There is no "definitive" information about nicotine only and/or vaping because vaping has not been around long enough that a true, longitudinal study can be done which would have to include never smokers long term vapers.

That is going to take a while. What research has been done that is actually "research" in the true sense of the word shows vaping nicotine vastly reduces harm.

Other than that, I can add my own anecdotal experience which includes the fact that I was nearing a COPD dx and on all kinds of steroids and inhalers and horrible things. My 18 months straight of pneumonia was gone within two weeks. I have been healthy since other than a minor pneumonia that put me down for 3 days, I use no inhalers or anything else, and I can't believe how good I feel.

If you are worried about the nic, well.... I was on cholesterol meds for about 9 years before I started vaping. Due to a variety of factors, I was not able to afford my cholesterol meds.

At my last physical (about 4 months ago after 3 years of not smoking but vaping and a FAIR amount) I fully expected to be lectured and put back on meds immediately. That did not happen, my cholesterol numbers (and ALL my numbers) were things of beauty and that is good enough for me.

By the way a doctor I knew claimed the tobacco companies knew the risks of combustion and tar (but not nicotine) and were considering vaporizing systems but the were not sure the public would "take" to them. I do not know where he "got" this information but he seemed fairly confident about it.

As others have mentioned, not enough time for true studies, but because there is no combustion, we aren't getting the nasty stuff from smoking. I can tell you that since I started vaping, about 8 years, my health has improved immensely. I no longer cough, get out of breath, hardly get sick, and I honestly feel healed. I smoked 1.5 pad for over 30 years and my doctor tells me he would never even known I was a smoker if I didnt tell him...I honestly feel vaping has saved my life...I still understand that vaping, although alot safer then smoking, is still not 100 percent safe to do, I mean we are still inhaling chemicals, so it's a harm reduction. Saying that, me personally, I try to vape as little as possible and to do that, I personally vape a higher nic with less juice consumption.
