Ditto with me. I am not smoking, so why should I ask permission? I simply start vaping. Occasionally, someone walks up and says, "Sorry, sir, no smoking." Then, I just smile and say, "I'm not smoking, this gives off vapor, not smoke...But don't worry, many folks make the same mistake." Then, they almost always just smile, say "sorry," and walk away. Only once in the last year has anyone said, "Well, please stop anyway, the customers seem annoyed." Then, I just stopped.

I'll give that approach a shot :)

In my experience "The customers are complaining/seem annoyed" is just code for "I don't like being wrong, but I'm in charge so I don't have to be" most of the time. It's usually the case that no one even made a cross look at me, but the manager sometimes has a bug up his/her .....

I don't push the point in that case, but I usually don't give that particular place my business anymore either.

I usually have no problems at all. One guy did come up to me and warn me to hide my crack pipe because a cop was coming.

For one of my many many attempts to quit smoking, my doctor prescribed a nicotine inhaler. I tend to think of my Riva as simply an enhanced nicotine inhaler and describe it as such. In my wallet, I have the little prescription card from the pharmacy for a nicotine inhaler and that usually stops "official" complaints.

OK, here ya'll go...

Fire up MS Word (or whatever word processor you have)
Creatively construct a 'script' (prescription form) for nicotine and delivery system (PV)
For authenticity, scribble the script and signature
Fold and lightly 'rumple' said script
Carry in wallet/purse
Hand script to the anti-vaping jack-booted SS Trooper
Drop head despondently and mumble "Doc's orders..."

NOTE: Do NOT present to anyone in uniform...

I vape everywhere mostly with permission. I try to be respectful of others. That's really the key of not getting hassled. I get questions from smokers and people who have smoking loved-ones wondering if it really works, where to get it, can they have my number if they have questions, etc. I hid my 1-1/2 PAD smoking habit (not well probably) for years. I vape proud and help as many as possible switch if they ask about it.

Only bad experience was the stink-eye my first few days with a cigarette look-alike tan and white ecig/PV. I'll never use one of those in public again. Lots of haters out there when you're sucking on something that looks like a cigarette.

OMG this is me and my experience exactly! Seriously ive been vaping in public for years now and still not a day goes by where I don't give someone, usually several people, my e-cig schpeel. Its just become part of my everyday life.

I'm a bit shy, and socially awkward... so how do you, typically, ask permission of restaurant/bar staff?
It usually goes something like this for me (to the waitress/bartender): "Hey, do you think it'd be ok if I used my vaporizer in here? Its an electronic cigarette, most places dont mind, but i wanted to ask anyway."

Usually I'll show them my piece when asking. And I always make sure to call it a vaporizer first. People hear cigarette and it freaks em out or something. lol
Most of the time they know what it is anyway and say its fine. Sometimes they haven't and ask a few questions.
I always offer to stop though if someone complains.

I dont vape in fancy and or small restaurants tho- it can be like having a giant spotlight on you! :O)

I find it better (in all aspects of life) to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. I have had no problems thus far though.

...one of the guiding principles of my life!!!!!! Applies to vaping as well................:2cool:

p.s by the way, an e-cig is one of those things they sell at the gas station and other slimlines with lesser batt life...anything else is a "personal vaporizer", which, I use to inhale my anti-anxiety medication(nicotine).........mj

i work in a small organic grocery store, where i take my smoke breaks in the alley. two passersby today see me vaping, get my attention, and proceed to repeatedly ask me for a cigarette. i held up my vaporizer and explained it wasn't a cigarette but almost to no avail, they look unconvinced i didn't have any tobacco.
i've also had people assume it's an herbal vaporizer. :p
i live in an area where smoking bans are pretty rigid, including a pending bylaw prohibiting public smoking around children. for that reason, i haven't tried to use my vaporizer in a public indoor place yet. when winter hits i'll probably be asking if i can use it inside, though.

I've been vaping a short time, but have had a few experiences already.

This morning, outside a local restaurant, a couple of teenagers stopped and asked me if my PV is "like those new electronic cigarette things", ostensibly because he had a cousin who was looking for one. I told him to have his cousin go to the PS website, if he or she is over 18, and look over the products there.

This afternoon, I wasn't really thinking about what I was doing and took a toot in a BlockBuster Video store. As it happened, my back was to the store employees as I hit the PV and dropped it back into my shirt pocket. I turned to look at the videos on the wall to my left, and exhaled at the same time. All three girls froze like statues, and watched me like a hawk the rest of the time I was in the store. It was a bit funny, really, because you could see the "Where the hell did he hide the cigarette?" look on their faces.

Hubby and I went looking at 5th wheels last weekend and I was giving my EgoT a workout as we walked around the lot. About an hour of looking...the salesman turned and asked me if I had asthma. Said yeah (I do, actually) and didn't really think much of it. Little bit later, he says, your asthma is really bad huh? No, why? Well, you use your inhaler a lot. I tried not to ROFL. EgoT looks NOTHING like my inhalers!

Vape proud Vape often....but in mixed company be polite and if it seems to you that your vape may be offensive then in that case just walk away. We as a community need to educate not antagonize..IMO
Mixed? you mean both sexes or pro an antz?,
If someone is ofended after an explanation, that says more about them than it dose you. Don't walk, run away.

Nobody answered so I thought I'd answer in case you're still around. If it's a bar by itself, I don't ask unless I'm traveling and I don't know the local laws. In a restaurant, when the wait person comes to the table, I'll pull it out and say, "Is it okay, if I use this in here?" The response it usually, "What is that? Oh, it's one of those e-cig things. Sure, that's fine." Occasionally they get the manager. One time I had the manager plop down and start writing down websites.

As others have said, it's better to use something that doesn't resemble a cigarette. The only caution I got was from that same manager and he said that there had been a guy at the bar the night before and everyone kept complaining about the guy smoking at the bar. He told me if that happened, I'd have to stop. I was using a homemade bottom feeder box mod. There weren't any problems.
