I think time travellers are excluded from this discussion!

Are you are suggesting that those of us who remember smoking on planes are old? No, we are just more realistic about things. Remember that way back before jets, those planes took a long time to get places...propellers you know.

Cars were just as bad. Back before interstate highways, it took forever to drive anywhere. Had to smoke in cars.

Covered wagons were the worst.

Lets see, I met my first (uh hem) in the smoking area in Junior High. Met my wife in the smoking area at work (many MANY years ago), got jobs in smoking areas, got a few (uh hem's) in smoking areas (well not in the smoking area but made the connection that led to the uh hem's), learned about "insider" company news hours/days before it was released to the rest of the company. And my current job, yup, went from a new-hire to a consulting contractor ahead of 25 other people from the unofficial smoking area out behind the electrical transformer at the main office, it was closer, can't be seen by security, has a nice bunch of shrubs to mask the smoke and ran into the CEO sneaking a smoke. Actually when he cam around the little wall and seen me I was sure I was fired because they have a zero tolerance policy especially at the mother ship. He sat down on another one of the crates and lit up then began a conversation like we had been friends for 20 years.

Yes, the official smoking areas were/are a source of networking long before the internet and social media. But if you wanted the best networking ditch the official designated smoking area and head for the clandestine unofficial area, that's where the others who are there are doing more than one thing they're not supposed to and the level of networking is exponentially better.

I get what you are saying. I sometimes feel like a bit of an outsider now. All my friends smoke, have no interest in vaping, and many of them seem to think that I'm a pretentious hipster for vaping. The shared need for a smoke used to be a bonding experience, now it seems like some of my smoker friends feel like my giving up the habit in favor of vaping to be somehow threatening or a condemnation of how they live.

Working in food service for years and years, a smoke break was likely to be the only break you would get. And nothing could compare to that first sit down smoke on the back dock after hours and hours running around the kitchen like a lunatic because we were slammed and in the weeds. My last job not working for myself, me and all my upper management bosses were chain-smokers. More serious work was done and big decisions were made at the picnic table in the smoking section out back than was ever done up in the office.

My dad always said, what are you willing to give up to get what you really want? I'm nostalgic about many aspects of smoking…but overall I feel like I've traded up even if that means people look at me funny.

Smoke and the world smokes with you, vape and you stand alone. Ok so I changed the words around but it still rings true. :D

I've always been the "odd man out" -- no reason to stop now. :D

Frankly I'm amazed at how long it took me to find out about and get interested in e-cigs, but I guess I had to really be sick of smoking before I was ready to find out. :D

Prague is like those beer commercials, where the guy is having a bbq in his backyard and all of a sudden a bunch of hotties show up, except the Prague hotties are wearing cocktail dresses and showing a lot of leg and have a thing for middle aged American men who are nice to them...
