vaping near entrances.

In Washington we a have a no smoking within 25 feet of public entrances law. When I was at my local mall ( that has a no vaping indoors policy) I was told by a security officer that I was vaping too close to the door and that I had to move further away. I was a bit taken aback. But I did out of curiosity. Do you think I should take something up with the mall about their policy on vaping ? Or just suck it up and vape in the smoking area. ? I know that there are no laws against vaping in my country. They tried and failed to ban them here.

... and have da rent-a-cop hold da end by da entrance/exit and just back off from him 'til he has to let go. Then vape you're azz off!

Or... shove it where da sun don't shine fer him and then hit da 'rapid retrieve' button and run like da devil...

Pick your battles dude. Just walk 25 whole feet away from an entrance. Not trying to be rude or anything, just being real about it.

Not worth the effort. Until it becomes more mainstream, it will look like smoking to a lot of people. I wouldn't say sorry, but I would say "Alrighty."

I agree with both of the above-quoted comments on a personal level; realistically we all have to pick our battles, but if the OP's feels up to it, s/he might write a polite letter to the people who run the mall to point out the differences between vaping and smoking.

That effort's not likely to yield any immediate or even noticeable results, but it doesn't hurt to spread the word.

Thanks for all the replies! I wont make it a big deal. Im okay with vaping in "smoking only" locations. I have written the mall a letter politely asking them about the policy on electronic cigarettes. Again. Thanks for all the replies. I just recently joined the ecf and it is by far my new fav ecig forum.

Don't write to the mall owners, write to a few of the small stores in the mall that you frequent. Explain to them politely that you indend to take your business elsewhere due to the policy of the mall.

The stores are paying mega-bucks to the mall in rent, and don't like losing customers. :)

I would agree, except not recommend the "take my business elsewhere" part. Just tell them that you are disappointed that the mall treats vapers like smokers. The e-mail carries 10X the weight if you can also say "I love the XXXXX I got from your store, and YYYY was so helpful!" (and if you say that first!)

Small business owners like customers, and they like friendly customers the best. If you go the "Taking my business elsewhere" route, you make an enemy right off the bat.

Be nice! You'd be surprised at what that does for YOU.

Personally, I know vaping is not as harmful as smoking. The rest of society does not know this. It will always be viewed as a form of smoking to most non smokers/ non vapers. If i were asked to vape away from doors I would gladly do so, it is a common courtesy. Even if what I am vaping smells great to me some may not like it as much. I am sure there are people who will think it's ridiculous, but I still believe in giving respect to other peoples sensitivities, even if irrational. On another note as vaping becomes more common there will be those who push back against it's use. Then there will be those who have an agenda to see it made illegal or strictly controlled, who will use that as a tool to further that agenda. If you rock the boat, so to speak, you only add fuel to the fire.

Having said all that, I understand the frustration with silly rules and the desire to make waves.

I can actually understand this Policy. If I'm sitting in close quarters, my second-hand Vaping actually causes 'some' people to sneeze ... in some cases, (and usually with the vapor produced by my Mods), it's made me sneeze also. :smokie:

We're not smokers, but to most, we're 'like' smokers. :glare:

"Dear store owner,

I love your store, but because I was told to vape 25 feet away from the doors I will be taking my business elsewhere."

I think the no loitering by stores has more issues then vaping by doors..

I fully meant to do it very politely. "I love your store, and your staff, but the mall's policy will force me to shop elsewhere..." Reword it to fit the store, gush over how you like the store, point out purchases you have made that you are overjoyed with, but the big bad mall villains are driving you away....

I love it.

The shop owners will most likely listen to such a letter. There is nothing negative or disrespectful with that tactic. Very nice.

You are not being treated like a smoker... You are being asked to not do something within 25 feet from the entrance. That does not mean you have to stand next to the smokers to do so. You can simply walk 50 feet away if there are smokers 25 feet from the entrance.

Agreed!

I say vape shouldnt be banned anywhere. Ppl who do ban it want to make us mad so why not return the favor? Vaping isnt smoking nor does it affect anyone around you like smoking does. Maybe do it more discreetly but to have to be put in a category with something thats harmul when you arent harming anyone isnt right. Most the time mall security has nothing to do so they are looking for things they can Add to the "bother ppl for no reason" list anyway. Its a free country if a man can weR a dress in the mall which has no negative affect on the ppl around him why can he do so when i cAnt do something that has no affect on Anyone? As long as you arent blowing humongo clouds in anyones face what your doing shouldng bother ONE person. Just be a little more discreet.

I'd just walk the 25 feet and not worry about it. Considering that in Seattle vaping is banned everywhere smoking is, Tacoma is fairly progressive about it. You can vape in,
Public places where minors are lawfully prohibited,
Places of employment that are not public places, and
Retail outlets that exclusively sell or promote electronic smoking devices.

There are vape shops popping up like whac a mole's and there's even a very cool vaping lounge called Steampunk Vapory Lounge.

I beg to differ... the OP is being treated like a smoker indeed! That 'something' mimics smoking, and therefore, it must be smoking, and therefore, he is only allowed to do it where smokers are allowed to smoke! How is that not treating the OP like a smoker?

You can simply walk 50 feet away if there are smokers 25 feet from the entrance.

What if, after walking 50 feet, the OP runs into another group of smokers, 25 feet away from the next entrance? What if the next entrance is 50 feet away? The only place the OP could vape is in the 25 feet spot, in between... along with smokers...! There is no other place for him!

You see, I'm not confortable with letting vaping being just lumped with smoking. If we always let people treat vaping like smoking, without challenging the fact that it is not smoking, the 'big crowd' of uninformed people will actually perpetuate the 'vaping equals smoking' myth... remember, many of the uninformed people are already being misinformed by ANTZ's junk-science spread on the media... we need to counter-attack ideology with proper science and facts!

If you think carefully, from an health-wise perspective, the 25 feet rule is already insane... even for tobacco! Would anyone be harmed by 'second-hand vapour' if you were vaping outside, say 10 feet from the entrance?

I'll say it again: the 25 feet rule is already insane... even for tobacco... even from an heath-wise perspective. Ideology is behind those illogical rules. An ideology made to vilify and belittle smokers.

When I smoked, I got fed up with my government passing laws made to vilify and belittle me... while pocketing my hard-earned money in exorbitant 'sin taxes'...

Well, from my part, I will not let that happen again, now that I'm vaping, NOT smoking.

Do not get me wrong: I'm not one of those 'in your face, wherever I feel like it' vapers... being disrespectful will not help us. But, being sheeple, hiding in corners, and missing good and proper opportunities to dispel all the BS we hear everyday about vaping will not help our cause either.

Sorry, I got a little carried away... rant over...
