This is what i'm worried about. I'm happy now with my little ego set up, now, but highly afraid of getting into the rebuildable ones. They just seem a bit confusing with all the different ones.

If you pick up a simple cheap rda, you'll probably find it well worth your while.
No tank to worry about; you control how wet the coil is yourself; gives you a way of figuring out just how your vape is supposed to taste; also provides a way to sample flavors, especially if you do some mixing up yourself.

I dont even remember when My last coils were changed.
But here is the run down
Kay, your setup----lets say total 70$ (including the glass tank) coils... a pack of 5...going to last you... 2 months.
then new ones.
What I did is I went on the internet (Fasttech) and bought a cheap clone tube mod and RDA. (24$ And 14=38$)
Then I went on Amazon and bought a decent charger 25$

then I bought a couple decent batteries 30$ (15 each)

Then As I waited to get it i read and reread baditudes blog About the safety (mostly about battery safety) Which are found herehttp://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/blogs/baditude/

Then I got some cotton (3$) and 10 meters of coil (5$)

total 101$ to get started
of course after that, i just went crazy and spent hundreds on new mods and new mods and new mods.

and now I am pretty much settled.... on regulated,
which would have cost me about 150 to get started with.... but...
ADVANCED vaping could be big initial start up cost and cheaper after

or... Vaping could be... smaller start up... and continued cost, still cheaper than cigarettes, but more in the long run than advanced gear.

of course you could get shinyitis, and dig your credit card in to a hole that you are just now starting to claw your way out of the depths of.

After watching 2 videos on youtube: 1 on how to make your own ejuice with links to suppliers, and another one on how much ejuice will cost me on the long run, I decided to order my own supplies to make my own ejuice. 15ml will now cost me only 95 cents. Yay!

I did the math awhile back, it doesn't cost more than $0.25-$0.50 to make 10ml of e-juice !
A quart of PG/VG would last me for years !

I was in the same boat. I wanted to get into vaping. But the price to start was outrageous. Or so I thought. I went to get started as an uneducated noob and was scared out by all the jargon and the prices. I started research and wanted to familiarize myself. I learned the terms and looked into a simple starter device i could be comfortable with. I was going to start with a vv/vw innokin MVP 3 but settled on the eGo One. You get a setup to sub ohm, a 2.5 ml tank. air flow control and cheap coils out of the box. 58 at my vape shop.

The juice is tricky vape shops sell premade mostly but the trick is to find a good place to mix it for you. I bought some at the shop I bought my pv at.

I ended up spending a hundred that day but I'm satisfied with my choice.

Coils last a long time and the battery can last several days before recharging if people would stop sub ohming the crap out of them.
I just jumped right into mech mods and RBA from the beginning, no eGo, no Twist or claros !

there are many factors in how long someone gets off a battery, I don't subohm and I still go through 2 18650's a day, and sometimes 3

The issue stems from things like the OP went through, they go to a B&M or even worse a mall kiosk and the prices are outrageous, mix that with not knowing if it will work for you, as lets face it how many of us wasted tons of money on patches, gum and the like, and you wind up second guessing yourself right on out the door. What we can get online for $30 a mall kiosk you may spend as much as $200 on.

I as well tend to stay away from vape shops, to expensive for my tastes

I didn't spend a single dime to vape in 2014, so here's the deal according to tj:

It should not cost more than 50 bucks to get started & find out if vaping is for you.
There are lots of choices that cost less than one weeks worth of smokes.
Starter Kits - Kits & Bundles

Now that you have your foot in the door start thinking about how to become "self reliant". If that "upgrade' mod or topper won't last for 5 years or more .... don't buy it! Take the time to learn how to wrap your own coils, and mix your own juice.

All of a sudden you will find that you are spending so little to vape that you can buy all the fancy stuff that you want. Might take a year+ to get to that point, but you can.

Aside from e-liquid and a couple of new batteries, I haven't spent a dime on vaping in the last 7 months.

I make my own coils and wick, and have enough wire and wick material to last at least a year or more (about $12 for a year's worth). Coils can last several months with dry burn cleaning.

Vg and pg are available at many drugstores or tractor supply stores. DIY concentrated flavorings are relatively inexpensive at a few online e-liquid distributors. I have about 500 ml of unflavored 24mg nicotine stashed away. Therefore, I could make my own e-liquid if I absolutely had to.

I have two mod setups that I use exclusively on a daily basis. A Silver Bullet mechanical with a RDA and a Provari regulated mod with a RTA. I've had these two durable mods for nearly 3 years. I chose to purchase from American companies who will service their products for life should they ever need to be repaired.

    Vaping caters for all budgets.
Though research helps you get the best for that budget.

    very true!

you can vape on a tight budget.. especially if you are educated.. but then again you can vape spending TONS of money getting caught up in shinyitis... as long as you can pay your bills.. and aren't smoking.. its a good step in harm reduction.

You can start out for 20 bucks, then if you want work your way up

I started with, and still use, a $16.99 ego-T kit. Bought an extra battery and some tanks, and different juices at different times so when I decided to go for it I had a nice little stockpile ready to go except for the nicotine juices.
