Flavorings, what usually gives the juice its color, are the big unknown in vaping. It's all generally recognized as safe, but that's in terms of eating, not inhaling. There are some scientists starting to look into it, but it will probably take some time before much of anything is really known. If you are concerned, vape unflavored. I usually don't inhale into my lungs at all, and I hope that minimizes whatever risks there might be.

I read an article somewhere about flavorings in general and they have a LOT of ingredients/chemicals in them. There is actually an industry for it. That being said, banana was the highest in ingredients/chemical with strawberry next.

The numbers were a couple of hundred which was an eye opener. Quality flavoring is big business. I mean quality as in taste, not ingredients.

As someone said, it is a a real untested variable. They are Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS) by the FDA, but, what is the quality of the testing?

All-in-all, it is better than a cigarette.

Studies indicate most nic absorption when vaping is through the mucus membrane -- and not the lungs. So rather than lung inhales, teach yourself to draw into your mouth and throat and exhale through your nose. Works for me.

Second, avoid any juice you suspect contains food coloring; though in this case it is probably the mocha.

Third, pay attention to your coils. Gunking is a byproduct of the flavorings, and an indicator of juice content and what's going into you lungs. The cleaner the coil, the better the juice.

Four, check for ingredients and avoid buttery flavors. You really don't want to put diketones into your lungs.

Anyway, just my $.02. Enjoy!

- Lung is not considered as a "mucus membrane"? (honest question)
- I don't take lung hits but I do the traditional way where I draw it in my mouth then inhale to lungs afterwards and exhale. I don't see how it's possible to just draw into the mouth then exhale straight through the nose without going to the lung first. Can anyone else do this?
- Yeah I'm learning more about diketones. Unfortunately I've bought over 100ml worth of Nicoticket Frenilla and Strawnilla already. I definitely won't buy more diketone juices. BTW your alias is "LoveVanilla"... how do you avoid diketones?

Most people are still drawing some vapor into the lungs when doing "mouth hits", and usually inhaling a bit at the end of the draw without realizing it. You're correct, if you're careful to hold all the vapor in your mouth you can't exhale it out your nose. It has to be drawn into the lungs/throat first.

Really? why do you have rain on my parade? LOL! I smoked for 30 years knowing full well what I was doing to myself. Vaping probably isn't safe, but it is the lesser of 2 evils. Honestly I prefer not even to think about it. I suppose One could switch to unflavored nic and eventually I probably will, but there is always some inherent risk to anything you put into your mouth and lungs. I believe that there is absolutely, positively nothing that could be worse than cigarettes.(those were the exact words from my doctor) we will probably never know in the near future about vaping until there is absolute proof of harm, if any. look up all of the chemicals in cigarette smoke and ask yourself if there is anything else that could be that harmful?

I've never gotten why some juice makers use food coloring. I have a banana nut bread ejuice that I bought; it's nearly black. I have some banana nut bread flavoring, which is a very, very light brownish color, from which I made an ejuice that was nearly clear. Both taste good, so why is the food coloring needed, in the pre-made juice? I really don't get that at all. Obviously it's better to inhale FEWER chemicals, and this is supposed to be about harm reduction, right? So why would a juice maker use so much food coloring that the ejuice is nearly black, when it could be made nearly clear?

So I put a tissue over the drip tip and vaped some Halo Cafe Mocha. It turned really brown just like analogs would. There is no surprise there because the juice is dark brown. So that coloring would go into the lungs just like tar from analogs would. I'm pretty sure it's safer than tar but is the coloring completely harmless?

Wouldn't a better test have been to blow the vapor through the tissue paper, rather than set it over the DT where you could quite possibly get juice spitback onto the tissue that is causing the darkening?

The only way to be completely sure when it comes to flavoring is to vape unflavored, unfortunately.

Life is full of tradeoffs. Is smoking safe? No. Is vaping safe? No. Is vaping safer? Yes, as long as certain flavors are avoided- like custards. I hedged by bets when I quit smoking and took up vaping full time by quitting drinking soda. I figured not drinking soda would offset the hazards of vaping...

I just tested vaping Halo Belgian Cocoa (24mg) off a Halo G6 (without inhaling to lungs) and blowing into a piece of tissue and it turned all brown.

I tried a couple of my "EC BLEND" tobacco flavored 'juice' and the tissue is wet (as expected) but absolutely NO "color" on the tissue.

DESERT BLEND (EXTRA FLAVOR)
MAPLE RUM CURED TOBACCO (EXTRA FLAVOR)

NOW as far as KILLER JUICE RY4 ............ BROWN BROWN BROWN .......... However there is a LOT of color to their RY4 (50-50 mix)

Good or bad? I have NO idea.

"completely harmless" is a stretch for anything. Living in Hong Kong can not be completely harmless nor can vaping.
Is vaping an acceptable risk, everyone must decide that for themselves.
The latest solid research I have found is here http://gfn.net.co/2014-vids

It seems that coffee flavors are not among the best flavors to vape. :(
Color is one component that we don't need sadly the flavor manufacturers have a different opinion. Perhaps on day soon a flavor manufacturer will develop a line specifically targeting harm reduction for vaping. I'm not sure that "we" know yet how to do this.
