Surf Music!!!

Contrary to popular belief, the Beach Boy's did not live at the beach, but grew up in a town about 5 mi. inland... and Dennis was the only one who actually surfed!! Although they did hang out in the town N. of here called Manhattan Beach/El Porto... :D
(sadly, and rather ironically, Dennis died of drowning off his boat in the Marina just N. of there)

POP (Pacific Ocean Park)

I was born in Santa Monica, where it was located. :2cool:
This video is from 1959, but the place operated until the late 60's, and was finally demolished in the early 70's... the last episode of the TV show "The Fugitive" was filmed there, too.

There was also a club called The Cheetah there in the late 60's, that was in an old ballroom on the end of one of the piers... and a lot of the "local" bands played there: like the Doors, The Mother's of Invention, Love, The Seeds... but of course, I was too young to get in... :(

Even some bands from 'Across the Pond' played there, too... :D

It was later renamed The Beach House, and continued to have live music, until the pier burned down in the early 70's...

Ok, this is the last of my 'Trip Down Memory Lane' for the day... ;) LOL!!

"Marineland of the Pacific was a public oceanarium and tourist attraction located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula coast in Los Angeles County, California, USA. When it opened in 1954, one year before Disneyland, Marineland of the Pacific was the world's largest oceanarium." **

"It was also known as Hanna-Barbera's Marineland during the late 1970s and early 1980s," [and] "was also noteworthy for its Baja Reef concept, a first-of-its-kind swim-through aquarium featuring a wide array of sea life. Visitors could enter the winding aquarium wearing a swim mask and snorkel and swim with the fish and sharks." This was added by Hanna-Barbera in the late 70's...

"After Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (the owner of the SeaWorld ocean park family) purchased the facility in 1987, Orky and Corky were moved to SeaWorld's San Diego park, where Corky was given the new name of "Shamu". Although the company had promised to keep Marineland open, it was closed in February 1987, six weeks after the sale was completed. Many local residents complained about the sudden closure." **

Unfortunately, Orky, the male, died two years later in 1988; however, Corky is still alive (she is now believed to be about 40 years old and the oldest of the seven killer whales in San Diego) and performing daily at Sea World in San Diego. She gave birth to seven calves, however all died soon after birth, with the oldest living only for 46 days.

"Much of the infrastructure was left abandoned for nearly 20 years.

In 1995, developer York Long Point purchased 480 acres (1.9 km2) of coastal land that included the Marineland location for $24 million." **

It now looks like this!! :(

It's really a shame that they pulled such a dirty trick by closing without any warning, because I would have loved to have gone there one last time, as I'm sure thousands of other people would have, too!!

I'm sorry for waxing all nostalgic in Today's entries... but this contest has not only reminded me of what an amazing time it was during the 60's and 70's, it also makes me realize how truly blessed I was to be living in SoCal then (and now), too!!

I am really Loving all of your posts!!! :D

I think this was 1963. It was the very first movie I went to at a movie theater. It brings back so many wonderful memories. Grandma had me wear my nicest dress and patent leather shoes. Didn't have socks so she cut down a pair of my grandpa's and sewed lace on the edge. Grandpa took me and after it was over we stopped for a soda and got a pepperoni roll to take home for grandma. It was a wonderful day and I felt like a princess.
