Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Love Missile F1-11 (1986)
Ex-Generation X bassist Tony James pulled together a band for his harder edge new wave. Calling themselves Sigue Sigue Sputnik, they scored a hit in 1986 with "Love Missile F1-11", taken from their debut album Flaunt It, which derived from a repetitive synth bassline (ala Devo) overlaid with clips from violent films. While the song became a hit on the dance floors of Europe and Asia, it was not until it was included in the film Ferris Beuller's Day Off that it became popular in the U.S. The controversy surrounding the video for the song, which portrays a futuristic urban war with band members openly gunning people down on city streets, only made for greater temptation and, thus, popularity (despite being heavily censored in some countries).
