Yeah I have been reading a lot. So many choices etc. was planning on the 28 awg but saw some interesting reviews on the ribbon wire so probably will play with both. As for wicking I think I am still planning on the silica (and try others like hemp) with the ss mesh ends. It's all trial and error really but that is part of the fun of rba's. I have various different materials ordered just so I could experiment. The scientist in me will enjoy that.

In sad vape-email news, my vamo ordered has been delayed multiple weeks for some reason. To tide me over since my agi will be here next week I think I may have to scour the classifieds and blogs for a nice inexpensive "backup".

Morning wolfies! happy Sunday to you all!

VG - that was a ton of info you put out there! Wonderful! I have one comment about the wire gauge... I use 28 now and love it. I would like to get some 30 and try it. However, when I first started with RBAS/gennies 32 was easier for me to uses. Because it is thinner it was easier for me to wrap the wick the appropriate tightness with. When I first tried using 28 I had trouble with gaps around the quick and that led to hotspots.

Rebuilding does have a bit of a learning curve, but it really isn't hard. My advice for anyone looking to start rebuilding is to do what VG has obviously done and read a ton, and watch a lot of YouTube videos.

Today I am looking forward to go to a vape meet and then hopefully going to see my grandma.

Yup, that's the Fun of RBA's. I haven't tried the Ribbon Kanthal. It makes much better Contact with the Wick, but I've read that it's pretty hard to work with. Patience is the Key here, as you have to keep one flat side in contact all the way around. So there's more work to it, but the advantages far outweigh the little PITA.

Max has said that he uses it. I'm not sure which one to select for the right ohms/inch, like with Round Kanthal, but I do look forward to playing with it one day. You can also find the Ribbon Kanthal on eBay.

Sorry about your Vamo delay. I think it's probably a Production issue.

If you want to try things like Cotton Twines (Candle Wick, Wal-Mart Peaches and Creme, etc.) and Hemp Twines (from BJ's threads), you really shouldn't need the SS Mesh on the Ends, or under the Coils. BJ doesn't do it. Hemp Twine especially will stay together quite well, as the Twine kinds are already wrapped like a Rope. Just don't wrap it as tightly as you would Silica, because you'll need room for the Expansion. If you wrap it too tight, you'll Choke the Capillary Action and reduce the Juice Flow under the Coil. But one thing BJ has started doing is experimenting with putting an Isulating layer on the long leads of the Kanthal, to stop Shorts on the leads. Can't remember where I saw that, but I'm gonna try to play with it.

If you can afford it, this is a really handy No-Resistance Wire (Sliver NR) to Kanthal (Res) Wire Joiner . . .

You can make Precision Ohm Coils with this device. :)

Hi Mare,

I enjoy helping when I can. :)

Ease of making the Wraps is one of the reasons that BJ43 cited for using 30g. Another thing you can do to make any Kanthal/NiChrome easier to work with is run the flame from a cig lighter, like a Bic, across the entire length a few times. This cleans off most Machine Oils, and also Tempers the wire, making it hold the bends of the Wrap better - it's much less Springy. And not being as Thick as 28g, you have more room for spacing the Wraps. People who have switched from 28g to 29g and 30g have done it for these reasons.

Getting Hot Spots out is pretty easy to do with a Tooth Pick. Heat to Coil to Glowing to find the Hot Spots, and move the Wraps around slightly to adjust the Spacing. Just a few little adjustments will usually do it pretty quickly. Just let the Coil cool down enough between Glowing to keep from burning the Tooth Pick.
