They are. It's often tough to find a reputable breeder. That, and they can be pricy acquisitions.

Our CoyDog is a pretty amazing beast. I think we were 'meant' to have her. Neglected & poisoned, animal control brought her to the clinic where my wife's a vet. Angela brought her home home so she could monitor her health at night and on the weekends. It took quite a while before she was satisfied that her kidneys weren't permanently damaged. It was amazing to watch the transformation from a fearful, food aggressive, scrawny critter to a dog full of love, who's a integral member of our pack. :D

I looked into getting a wolf dog awhile back. They really are beautiful animals.

I found a good breeder in TX and his prices were quite reasonable. Average price was about $300 or so. Lots of cute pups to. He has a really nice habitat set up on lots of land.

I can't remember where my brother got Brisco as a pup (it was a long time ago!) ...but it was here in California I know.

He told me the pups were actually in a den - a cave, on the breeders property - with lots of "human contact".
Brisco was SO cute when he brought him home, and grew up big and beautiful.
I'm sure it wasn't - but his head looked like the size of a lion's head to me!
(He would have been a BIG surprise to any burglar! ha,ha)
