OK, I'm home now.
I've used allot of different gauge round wires and found something much better. I'm now using flat wire to make my coils, it's: Kanthal D Ribbon resistance heating flat wire.
I love this stuff! I'm using 0.5 x 0.1mm or 0.020 x 0.004" flat wire now, thinking of getting some thinner flat wire: 0.4 x 0.1mm / 0.016 x 0.004" Kinda waiting on Count to give me his thoughts on the thicker stuff first...hint, hint.
Flat wire gives much more coverage on the wick and there for more vapor production.
First off, Thanks for Sharing.
Flat Kanthal is great. It gives more surface contact.
OK, now for the wick:
I've tried allot of types of fibergalss/glassfibre wick material as well as Cotton material, both are good in there own way.
But now that I've tried ceramic wick material I'm probably not using much of the other wick material any more. Ceramic seems to hold up much better and not break down with massive usage, heck I've been using the same wick and coil for like a month now.
I just spray it off with water, dry burn it till the gunk is all burnt off, respray it, blow dry it and start using it all over again.
Maybe this helps you out? I dunno? But I'm hooked on making my own wick and coils.
Ceramics scare me. I'm not saying don't use it, but there are really good ways to use 500 SS Mesh, even in a U-Shape Wick. For a U-Shape, roll it SS on the Bias. Please see
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/330407-500-ss-mesh-212.html#post7146944.
But don't do the Torch Burn anymore. People are washing off the Mesh with Soapy Water or Everclear. Rinse it well, Dry it, and Roll it. Then they wrap the coil, like around a drill bit, and Glow Burn it a few times on very Low Power at first, working up the Power slowly, so as not to Pop it. This creates a Safe layer of Aluminum Oxidation. Then slip the rolled wick into the coil. In case that knocks off some oxidation, you Glow Burn at Low Power again, but keep the mesh and coil wet with DW. This will re-oxidize the Coil, but not heat the Mesh too bad (don't want it getting Red).
So now you have non-oxidized Mesh with an oxidized Coil. People using this method have a Coil and Wick that lasts as long as your Ceramics. It hardly gunks up at all. My friend who developed this method of Cleaning, then a DW Glow burn, said he Vaped heavily for two weeks and checked it, only because it had been so long... still worked like Day One, and still looked like Day One. I've told others about it, and they verify. This was developed after Boden's CR(VI) thing, and covered in there, too.
Max,
Where did you get your flat wire?
The only place I can find that sells it is in Germany.
It's on eBay. Just do Goggle Search for
ebay kanthal d 0.5
ebay kanthal d 0.4 or whatever.
