If it's painful I would think it's a reaction to one of the ingredients in the juice, maybe the flavoring, I feel bad for you, that's gotta be unpleasant...

It is unpleasant. I have wondered about what else I could be reacting to, that's why I've tried so many different juices from about 6 different vendors so far, trying to stick to "all natural" but not always. I usually keep about 6 or 7 flavors in separate cartos so i can switch frequently throughout the day. So far, the only thing that helps is to vape less. It's a bummer.

I got vapors tongue, TWICE within the first month and a half of vaping. First time lasted 9 days second time 4. It sucked and the only thing that helped it was time, unfortunately. I did all the "hyped" remedies I read on ECF and the Internet and nothing worked.

I continued to constantly brush my teeth, lightly brush my tongue, used Biotene gel and drank enough water to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool. What did help to not get it again besides all of the above is I now always have around 12-15 tanks loaded with different flavors and switch 5-7 up daily. I think some people are prone to just become numb to flavors quicker than others.

I also have one tank loaded with Halo Fusion (unflavored) and use that daily too just to get my nic fit in check w/out blasting flavor in my mouth. Also I try not to point the drip tip directly down towards my tongue but rather towards the back of the throat when vaping. It helped w/the occasional "burnt tongue" feeling I was getting too

Good luck!

Well, I'm new and here I am learning something new already. I've never had VT, but I notice a dulling of flavor, like some people have stated already. All of my flavors have some menthol in them so maybe that's why I haven't experienced VT. I don't stay very hydrated, honestly....but I don't vape as often as most people. Sometimes I go a couple days without. When I started vaping, I got major sensitivity on my bottom teeth...so everyone just reacts differently to this stuff.

I think vape tongue solutions are pretty much a myth. It lasts for varying amounts of time, so prove the solutions have anything to do with it. :)

I use 80% vg and don't have any problems generally. I did have vt when I first started, but none of the pain or irritation you mentioned.

Try taking a few hits of menthol I've heard that helps. Never had full on VT but I noticed dulling of flavor. A website suggested you may have a thin layer over your tongue which is stopping the flavor from reaching your taste buds. Take your toothbrush and scrub the crap out of your tongue, without making it bleed of course lol

I've always been a big fan/user of Listerine, (the original), and find that i've been scouring out my maw alot more frequently since i started vaping.....never heard of VT bfore reading this, but suspect this is why i'm going thru nearly twice as much listerine as i usually do...lol

PG seinsitivity is an issue for many, myself included, I get a sore throat from PG, A few threads have been posted regarding it, unfortunately very little juice can actually be 100 percent VG, by the time you add flavoring which most are PG based. I would suggest a visit to the doctor. That or try various PG/VG mixes, see if they effect you more, or less.

I also haven't smoked analogs for more than 10 years now, and lose my sense of taste often, have not confirmed it, but it may be related to Prescription meds for me.

Sharp/strong flavors, vinegar, horseradish pickles all help some giving my taste buds a kick, but not always, and not always completely.. I switch up juice flavors often.

I mostly Vape 100%VG and have been a VT victim.
Couple things that work for me:

Hot sauce. Not the kind that a cute girl would say "I like hot sauce" to, more like the kind that screams at you and says "damn that's hot"!

Pickles or pickle juice. I eat a couple here and there and that has worked wonders.

A nice stiff vodka & cranberry. Other enjoyable side effects included.

Was just reading a post about how much people are vaping per day and realized that most of the time, I'm a pretty light vaper. So why am I getting vapor's tongue so often? On average I'm using less than 2 ml per day of either 0 or 6 mg, usually max VG liquid, and every two or three days I end up with what feels like burns and a funky discoloration on my tongue (looks like coffee stains…gross).

You know, that does not sound like vaper's tongue. And I haven't run into people reporting getting VT repeatedly. It's more often a one time thing. Most often early on when they first start vaping. But a discoloration on your tongue? If that's vaper's tongue, that's news to me.

You should talk to a doctor. Remember, most of us here are ex-smokers right? And smoking is seriously bad for your health in so many ways. You it is possible you have an issue from the smoking (or other tobacco use, whichever you switched from) that has just coincidentally emerged now that you're vaping and the vapor is irritating something the smoking caused.

Like over here at WebMD: Tongue Problems: Sores, Discoloration, and Tongue Bumps. Smoking is among the culprits they list for causing your tongue to be sore.

They mention black tongue effect and say:

"Though troubling in appearance, a black, hairy tongue is typically nothing serious. The small bumps on the surface of your tongue, called papillae, grow throughout your lifetime. In some people, the papillae become excessively long, rather than being worn down by daily activities. That makes them more likely to harbor bacteria. When these bacteria grow, they may look dark or black and the overgrown papillae appear hair-like."

There's a funny, kind of backward phenomena a lot of people talk about here on ECF that the chemicals in cigarette smoke can suppress an existing problem by killing bacteria in your mouth. That is, it's possible you were developing something while smoking but the poisons in the smoke kept "knocking back" the bacteria (and I mean literal poison, I smoked 30 years but only recently discovered cigs contain hydrogen cyanide... the stuff they used in the "gas chamber" for executions!).

I've seen any number of new vapers complain of dental problems after they've been vaping a while. Myself included. The bacteria were already there and doing damage but the smoke was killing them back and slowing them down. Once the smoke was gone, they revved up and took off. I had an old, old root canal that went *nuts* for a while. I was near just getting the tooth pulled it was hurting so much.

So you have to consider the possibility that it's something that was already developing and it's the removal of the poisonous chemicals in tobacco that has allowed it to "take off".

mkbilbo: Thanks for the info. I looked at Web MD and there are lots of things that might be causing my problem. I can't help think it's related to vaping, though. I've been off cigs for 5 months and started vaping just 2 months ago (when I started craving cigs so much I almost picked 'em up again). WHile it may be a coincidence, the tongue problems started at the same time I started vaping. When I stop vaping for a 1/2 day or so I feel better. When I don't vape for a whole day and night, it goes away….until I vape again. I will go see my doctor though, b/c if it is something else I 'd like to fix it so I can actually enjoy vaping as much as I'd like to!

Well, I am nowhere near a doctor of course. All I can tell you is I've never heard vaper's tongue described anything like what you're experiencing. It's usually just a nuisance thing. Lose your sense of taste for a few days for nobody knows why. I've never read anybody talk about it being painful. Nor have discoloration. That's... I dunno.

Time for expert opinion. :)

You know, the changes you go through after quitting can go on a while. I'm eight months out myself and I still have bouts of what I've come to call "the drowsies". A few days I flat can't wake up. Not even if you gave me coffee by an IV. First time it happened, it was unreal. I could have slept all day long. It's not all the time. Just... sporadic. A few days here and there. And each time, milder.

I have a sneaking suspicion cigarettes have some stimulants in them other than nicotine and I'm still adjusting to going without them. Still "leveling off" as it were.

Since you're having more difficultly than classic "vaper's tongue", I had to wonder if maybe it's something else and the vapor irritates or agitates it. Some of the stuff on WebMD talked about bacteria and smoking (having actual poison in it) can "knock back" bacteria. Since you have some months of being smoke free, your body is recovering but maybe some critters are too and they're up to no good. It's hard to say. Especially as I ain't got no medical degree.

The other things to think about are reactions to flavors or VG. Do you have allergies? I don't know if you know this but VG is vegetable glycerin and is derived from plants. Some folk turn up with allergic reactions to it. You ever had a problem with allergic reaction to soaps? They use a lot of VG.

Are you using "max VG" because of a PG allergy? If not, you could try a 100% PG liquid and see if it does the same thing. You could also try unflavored juices. See if maybe it's a flavoring additive that's the issue.

(I have allergies. Pinning one down is a pain in the neck. It's a silly, complicated process of elimination. I went lactose intolerant last year. Which I didn't know could happen. I thought you either were or you weren't. I was wrong. It's actually common to become lactose intolerant as an adult. Took me about a month to pin down what the gas, cramps, and dashes to the restroom were about. Fun times!)

You have any food allergies? The flavorings used in e-liquids are food flavorings. Lot of the supplies DIYers use, they get from companies selling baking and candy supplies (like LorAnn).

I'm just throwing ideas around, see if anything strikes a bell or something. Hopefully somewhere in all my rattling on is something useful. :)

"would a baking soda tootbrush scrub down on the tongue work? just a thought "

I use a mix of kosher salt and baking soda dissolved in warm water. I then gargle it, brush my tongue with it, gargle again and then rinse clean. Works as good as anything for the dreaded vapors tongue. --Bo-- :p
