I got my Variant in the first shipment out from vaportekusa, have been using it for a month now and absolutely love it. The first one I received stopped seeing any atomizer connected to it after 1 day, but I returned it and it was promptly replaced.
The 1200mAh battery is maybe a little misleading, because while it's only 1200mAh that's at 7.4V, so you can pretty much double the power compared to a similarly rated 18650.
As to replacing it with a larger battery, I was able to pick up an E-Flite 1300mAh battery that does fit, but bought a Zippy 1300mAh from HobbyKing that wasn't slim enough.
The only things I don't like about the mod are that you cannot reset the puff counter and the way it cycles is kind of strange, in that once it gets to 999 instead of resetting and counting normally for the next cycle it increments by 10 until it hits 990, then increments by 100 until it gets back to 0, then cycles by 1's through the next cycle. Rather strange to me, but livable.
The other is that it doesn't seem to regulate voltage down very well. I have metered it across the coil at various voltage settings and the meter display matched the mod settings for each, but that doesn't change the fact that the variant set at 10 watts produces the same vapor production and flavor that an IPV2 and T-8 do at 20 watts.
All in all, I couldn't be more happy the the Variant, and for the first time in the 2 years that I've been vaping I'm not looking for the next best mod coming out.
