Another benefit of ignoring pin 1 is that the build is simpler and can be smaller that way. This is how I like to use these also, and I even forego the vv by using a fixed resistor for an even smaller build.

I'd say the real reason to use these are for the step down efficiency and ample power.

Help me out here. You have to have a power switch of some kind, either it can be a tactile or it has to handle 10+A/6V. The latter are pretty big buttons.

That's not how a Step Down Regulator works. The amperage on the battery side is lower than the output side. A 3A P.B. would be sufficient. C&K makes a nice one and smaller then the horn button.

there are tactile switches rated for 5 amps here Invalid Request so you could do both have a tactile and avoid the minute drain on the batteries breaktru warned about all without using under rated parts like some do.
just realized after posting, that is probably a link to the exact part breaktru was talking about. not sure why it says invalid request but the link works fine for me

Do you mean step down regulator? The 3A/28v switch you specified can handle that power in any regard. I guess the 5a/12v switch is technically exactly minimum for full amperage.

I know those look like the small tacti switches but that switch is 10mm square.

Anyway I just feel like the ability to operate the regulator with a wider range of low-power switches is one of the great benefits. You have far more options for design, you can use thinner wires, you can increase switch lifespan, and/or you can use a smaller switch.
