Chris Snowdon has a good blog post here:

Velvet Glove, Iron Fist: A useful website

It's about another group of nutjobs with a pressure campaign on MPs, about tobacco marketing (yes, to the children, of course). He suggests we use their automated website system that emails MPs with the usual garbage. What?

Ah - you can change their silly text to read our message instead! Clever. (See text below.)

The website automatically emails your local MP when you input your address. Make sure to get your address right, and also the email title, salutation (Dear.......), and signature.

Note for US / CAN / AUS and other members: if you have a UK relative then maybe they can be persuaded to do this for you (MP = Congress rep). Or maybe just use their address then let them know later...
To check their correct address including the zip code, use this service:
www.192.com/people/search/

If you type in say H Higgins and the city as Birmingham, you get a selection of addresses and you can choose the right one. Of course, you must not use this for non-existent relatives at fictitious addresses as this would be entirely wrong. And you should certainly not return to the 38degrees website from other computers in different places and repeat the exercise with different names.

Here you go then: a sample of some text you can insert instead of the 38degrees drivel :)

Please ignore these idiots

Dear xxxxxxxxx,

You may receive several emails from anti-smoking zealots complaining about tobacco industry marketing. This is because a lobby group, 38degrees.org, has set up a website that sends automated emails to MPs.

Please ignore them, and instead address the fact that government policy kills a minimum of 40,000 smokers a year in the UK. If e-cigarettes and Snus, the Swedish smokeless tobacco, were used and widely promoted instead of the useless pharmaceuticals that the NHS stop smoking services are based on, it is estimated that at least 40% of the smokers who currently die each year would instead survive.

Snus is currently banned in the UK due to an EU directive created as a result of pressure from the pharmaceutical industry, worried about sales of its NRTs (quit smoking treatments). However, these drugs have a success rate of only 2% to 7%, proven by countless clinical trials and surveys. Sweden, though, has the lowest smoking-related mortality in the developed world, and a cancer death rate half that of the UK - entirely due to their use of Snus.

E-cigarettes have the potential to outperform even Snus in the saving of life. If smokers convert to an e-cigarette or Snus, it is likely they then have the same risk as a non-smoker - and this is proven, in the case of Snus. The Department of Health (principally, the MHRA, an agency within it) is now trying to ban e-cigarettes as well.

With Snus and e-cigarettes banned, the UK can continue to be proud of its massive smoking death rate - over 100,000 per year. The quit-smoking drugs will continue to rule the day, with their 98% failure rate. Business as usual then.

To find more information on e-cigarettes, and read about the scandal of the continuing high death rate due directly to government policy influenced strongly by the pharma industry, please see: www.eccauk.org

Yours sincerely,

xxxxxxxxxxx

I'm American, but have just convinced my British wife to send her MP a note.

Looking at the website, we were shocked to discover how easy it would be to send numerous messages to a variety of MPs from this website, with the content of your choosing. Surprising design flaw- though as you observe, that might not be ethical.

Best,
Ande

Thank for referencing those links to examples of research, Vocalek.

Unfortunately the anonymous ASEs have appeared there :) OK, I know ANTZ is nice, but I like Anti-Science Extremists or ASE - you supply the R.

I also liked CASAA being a satellite site of ECF. Excellent :)
