Like Bevis and Butthead, I crave wood. More specificly, I couldn't live without the Hawian Koa with the amazing maquetry. I've worked with wood for most of my life but could never come close to skill like that.
Birch, (love the name) you got a pretty special one IMO. I was tempted to have Mike build that one for me. I need to find more of that stuff.

I got to see this in person last summer and if you love art in wood, you will be very very happy. Just beautiful and made by a great guy who loves his craft.

Wow! What a nice thing to say 44. I really appreciate that. :)

Mist, I looked up koa in Wikipedia. Apparantly most of the large trees have been logged off, but it's kind of like our poplar trees and grows like a weed if given the chance. I was interrested to learn that Trey Anastasio uses a koa hollowbody Languedoc. By the way, have you ever used tamarak wood? It's a larch, very high in silica, extremely strong and impervious to rot. My house was built with tamarak and it easily dulls/breaks carbide tools. Tamarak fenceposts put in by the first settlers are still standing and holding wire. It might make an interesting laminate, if someone foolish enough to turn it could be found.

Yeah, Tamerak has to be one ofthe most difficut woods to work, almost as tough as ebony. There's one sawyer in my area that does mill it into thick stock. When it.s green it can be worked, but dry-forget about it. I want your bandsaw! All I've got is a Delta surface planer, which is nice if I don't have to remove too much stock.

I live in NE Minnesota, 60 mi north of Duluth, go north another 50mi to get to Ely, the doorway to toe Boundarywaters Nat. Park. A low range of hills called the Iron Range bisects the area and featurs enormous open pit mines where iron ore has been extracted for the past 100 years. Hundreds of lakes and low population make this a pardise for fishing and hunting. Sombody shot a mountain lion last year, and the wolves chase deer thru the outskirts of town. Bears will scatter your trash, and coyotes Can be heard having a sing-song at night. The kids are bored to tears and long for the big city. After a couple years most of them want to come back. Pretty much like northern Michigan, I'm thinking.
