Ideally I'd like them top and bottom. If the battery swells and closes off the tube vent holes at the wrong end won't do much good. As far as I know though, most just have them at the bottom. I haven't bought any new mods in a while though, maybe the standard has changed.

Most of the time they vent from the top.

Thats why i like the Pico so much. The battery goes in positive side down and has vebt holes on the bottom where you need them.

If the battery vents tge gasses will go away from your face

An 18650 is designed to vent from the positive end, so at the least you want holes at that end of the mod. As stated the cell may swell blocking the tube so holes top and bottom is ideal.
Vent holes are a last ditch line of defense. If you use quality cells with an appropriate amp limit and you are sensible then you should never need them. I have drilled additional holes at both ends on my mechs because I like the sense of security it gives me.

As has been said above, batteries are designed to vent their buildup of gas through the positive pole of the battery, through a designed weakness built into the battery. Conventional wisdom would be to design vent holes where the top of the battery is. For whatever reason, many mods have inadequate ventilation incorporated into their design. Especially mechanical mods, which are the ones that need it the most.

Batteries may expand in size from the buildup of gas and heat. The shrink wrap insulation around batteries may also deform to block gas from escaping from the other end of the battery. Many mods don't have room for the gas to get around the battery for release (see image below), so if ventilation is inadequate the tubular metal mod literally becomes a pipe bomb.
