Finished the 1st one and wanted to see if I could make one using a 3x2x1 box. It was a TIGHT fit, but worked out really well. The box is deeper than it needs to be so it can be thinner by about 1/4 inch.

....and now back to making the volt meter and juice feeder version

Nicely done Parallex2,
Tell me about the meter that you're going to use. Seems like a necessity if your using a variable resistor.

That is a sweet mod.
I picked this one up a couple mo. ago on ebay and I'm going to use it one of these days. It has the on off switch right on the board.

Going back to original post and the converter, I noticed it states on mdfly's website that ( The input voltage must be 3V higher than the desired output voltage.) Is that what you guys are doing here or did I miss something ?
That doesn't make sense, as that would mean that set at 5.5V output it would not even fire.

From the chip's (LM2596S-ADJ) datasheet the DOV input-output differential (V) chart seems to indicate about 1.3V, which makes more sense.

From another forum, a member who built it exactly like Mamu, except with slightly larger cells.
with 2 18350's was getting close to 2 days of good moderate vaping @ ~5.1-5.3v

I also know that Mamu is a 5+V vaper.

Sorry to bring back a fairly old thread, but I'm intrigued by this and now want to try one of my own!

Just ordered 2 of these

LM2596 Step Down Adjustable DC-DC Power Supply Module - eBay (item 120631004621 end time Mar-06-11 00:05:23 PST)

The specs seem to be the same as the other ones mentioned, but I like the size dimensions better. Will this work? The one thing that threw me off when I went back to look at it was this quote:

"3. Output 1.5-33.5V adjustable (building load debug) We default shipping 5V voltage regulator for other voltages can be their own or purchase."

But I'm thinking I'll be alright because the key word in there is adjustable, and the fact that they give a voltage range rather than a single output rating eases my mind a bit.

I think they are trying to say that it ships preset to a output of 5 volts. My best guess anyways. It should work fine for a mod. Not the greatest efficiency rating for the lower voltages but for sure will do the job. LM2596 - SIMPLE SWITCHER Power Converter 150 KHz 3A Step-Down Voltage Regulator

Good to hear, thanks Java_az.

One more question, do you all think it would be doable to put the regulator in the box on its side (with adj screw facing toward the outside of the box, with a hole in the side of the box to get a screwdriver in for adjustment)? I'm thinking that, if this is doable, I can fit the regulator, 2 CR123s, and a 3ml juice bottle in a 3x2x1 enclosure. I'm going to pick up a 3x2x1 today and a 4x2x1, and make some test pieces out of cardboard or something and see if I can make it all fit.
