Happy Sunday everyone,

I went to use my VGO 900mAh battery last night (like these, but from a different vendor). The battery is about three months old, out of warranty.:(

It had a 510 cartomizer in it, recently refilled, about 1 month old, used earlier that day. I took a drag and inhaled a very hot puff of burnt, atty tasting stuff which made me cough. I could hear the atty in the carto sizzling, and the light on the diamond battery button was blinking. I immediately unscrewed the carto and the light stopped. I didn't smell anything and nothing seemed overheated. I was pretty fast at getting the carto out.

I tried another cartomizer, pushed the button and the light just blinked 20 times, but nothing else happened. No heat, no vapor. Just 20 blinks.

I cleaned the battery thoroughly and put it on the charger. The battery light blinked 4 times as usual, but the charger never changed to red, just stayed at what would be a normal fully charged blue. Tried a different charger, (these are VGO chargers which are proprietary to these batteries). Again, battery blinks as if it's going to charge, but charger stays blue instead of blinking red to blue.

If I screw any carto into it, the battery just blinks 20 times.

BTW, the carto I was using is rated 3.0 ohms on the vendor's site. I don't use lr cartomizers.

Is my battery dead? Could the cartomizer have killed it? Should I throw out the rest of the cartomizers from that box? (I don't want to risk my other VGOs or my eGo.)

Is there anything I should try that might fix the battery? But mostly, I so want to understand what the heck happened to avoid it from happening again????

Thank you ECF family, I appreciate any help, or knowledge.

Natalia, do you have a multimeter? You could test the carto to make sure it's the culprit. However, I agree with Nightseer; your carto shorted and the short killed the battery. Happened to me once when I was testing some rather inferior cartomizers. But I was dumb enough to put the same carto on my other battery and I promptly killed that one too. :) Don't do that!

Did you say you've been using that carto for a month? Well, that's probably the reason. They are disposable and they were not designed to last that long. Some do, with luck, some don't. My personal, self-imposed limit is ~5-6 ml of eliquid per cartomizer. Then to the recycling bin they go.

As always, YMMV.

Thanks Katya. I don't have a multimeter, but I should get one and learn how to use it.

I immediate threw the carto away fearing it was the culprit after reading about they can suddenly drop resistance. I thought that only happened with lr cartos, DOH!!

I'm going to follow your lead on this. It's definitely not worth it to keep cartos longer than 5ml!
It was my favorite battery :(

Tha sad thing is, it can happen with any carto (atty) and an eGo/Riva/Tornado battery. Poor QC, wear and tear, fragile coil wire, anything, really. In my case it was a brand new dud--2.6Ω.

5-6 ml is just my limit, YMMV, I had cartos that maybe lasted me a bit longer, if they were exceptionally good, but not a month. Another good trick to refresh a carto that is working fine for you is to vape some (1 ml or so) of unflavored eliquid through it (100% PG or a an 80/20 PG/VG mix.) If you hate the taste, don't inhale. Just keep on vaping till it's gone. Then fill the carto with pure PG and let it sit overnight. PG is a solvent and will safely remove a lot of gunk from your carto so you can extend its life a bit.

Happy vaping!

I'm sorry, but I'm proud of you that you had the presence of mind to take it off your battery and toss it right away. I didn't.

Honestly, it's thanks to you, Lorikay (sp), Scottbee, and others that I suspected the carto in the first place. My first foray into the forums started with the thread "Burning Cartomisers? Dangerous?-510/Kr808/4081...etc filler type cartos". I like to follow as much as possible, even if I don't understand a lot of it :)

I'm so sorry you lost two batts to one dud carto. I just tell myself the battery was 17.95, that's much less than a carton of analogs where I live. (Positive spin).

I have to get some straight unflavored PG now. Thank you for all the great tips! Oh, and Happy Valentine's Day :)

Hi Natalia. If you or a friend is handy with a soldering iron, you might try taking the dud battery apart and seeing if it was just the wiring that shorted out. I've had two of them (one mine, one a customers) that I've been able to resurrect through re-wiring after some pretty rough handling (a 10 year old's knee to an e-cig that's in your pocket is NOT good for them, in case anyone was wondering). Shoot me a PM and I'll see what advice I can offer.
