I'm so mad I could spit nails. One city in CA banning PV's and the rest will follow. Why isn't the tobacco industry doing anything to market PV's so people will understand what they are?

Vista bans indoor e-cigarette smoking

VISTA, Calif. – A smoking method considered a “cleaner alternative” to lighting up a cigarette is still not acceptable enough for the City of Vista.

The City Council voted 4 to 1 Tuesday evening to ban e-cigarettes from being used indoors at restaurants and most public places. They said the main reason is for enforcement, claiming it would cause some confusion between e-cigarettes and regular ones.

Council’s decision has many residents applauding. Chris Lawrence knows he’ll never worry about cigarette smoke when in Vista.

“I don’t want it around me personally, especially don’t want it around my baby,” Lawrence said.

The e-cig devices are typically made of plastic or metal. They allow users to inhale a nicotine vapor rather than tobacco fumes and they don’t emit second hand smoke.

Gena Knutson is with North Coastal Prevention Coalition, an organization pushing for the ban. She said the smokeless devices send the wrong message to younger generations.

“We’re hearing reports of these being used in middle schools and high schools,” Knutson said. “If kids see these and use these, they could become more addicted to tobacco products and continue onto tobacco products.”

Mario Mendoza has smoked “vapes” for five months and feels burned by the city council decision.

“So, it’s not allowed anymore?” said Mendoza. “It’s not even bad. You’re smoking vapor. It doesn’t affect anyone actually.”

The ban will go into effect in about 30 days.

At least it's not a true city-wide ban, but they are treating them just like cigarettes and banning in the same places. The topic title made it seem like they banned them indoors at peoples homes too, not just restaurants, stores or some public places. Big difference there.

Yeah. I assumed they were confiscating pvs. Turns out the use is just prohibited where smoking is prohibited. I expect this will be the case throughout all of California.

Where states don't, cities or counties will.

This time, it's not just non-smokers contacting politicians.
Tobacco smokers are ...... because we can and they can't.

This time, there's relatively tiny opposition compared to
the larger number of tobacco smokers who lost anyway.

Tobacco companies have no interest in cannibalizing sales
of an established product for potential sales of a less
familiar one, with a probable future of similar restrictions.
They're adding e-cigarettes, but slowly and reluctantly.

Even if e-cigarettes get as expensive as tobacco and
e-smoking can only be done where tobacco smoking can,
and any nicotine use costs you employment opportunities
and increased insurance premiums, they'll still be safer
than traditionally smoking tobacco.

Well, isn't this just lovely... I live in Vista and I didn't even know this was happening.

Vista is one of a number of "cities" that comprise what is known as North County.
It includes cities such as Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Escondido, San Marcos, and Vista.

According to the agenda for the last council meeting it sounds like they are going to amend Vista Municipal Code 8.12 to include ecigs...

Municipal Code 8.12 delineates the places where smoking is not permitted...
muni code 8.12 smoking in public places - Laserfiche WebLink

This apparently includes tobacco shops and lounges, but not sure if that means any electronic cigarette shops.
Anyway, Vista doesn't have any electronic cigarettes shops yet, but Oceanside and Escondido do.

So anyway, yeah, they got me.

They're listening to Glantz spew about particles and nic in the air? The lies by the French study that quoted that absurb non-professional lab analysis that Dr. Farsalinos and others debunked?

We need footSoldiers with studies and documents in hand, running around towns like the ANTZ have theirs. This really sucks.

Don't feel alone DC2, the same thing happened in my area while I was off battling larger battles. :(. But, don't despair, we can fight city hall, despite what Meryl Haggard sings.

I slept through this one too over here in Carlsbad, which I assume already had a vaping ban, in effect. Cops here routinely write tickets for smoking in public, and I doubt they would make an exception for a PV, tickets are revenue ...

I often see private security writing tickets at the Oceanside Transit Center, they wait for a Greyhound bus to pull in, hide behind the vending machines, then pounce on anyone who lights up during the 10 minute layover between LA and San Diego. I stealth vape right in front of them, closest I ever got to being busted was when one of the "mall cops" approached me and sniffed for smoke. I was vaping a coffee juice and drinking a Starbucks ... :D

That's just beyond messed up.

I sometimes take the coaster down to a Padres game, but I pick it up in Carlsbad.
From what I understand they are getting ready to possibly ban alcohol on the Coaster, and if they do I won't take the Coaster anymore.

I vape at the Coaster stop in Carlsbad when I'm there, but I have never seen any rent-a-cops there.
On the other hand, I haven't heard about any other cities in San Diego lumping vaping in with smoking yet, other than Vista now I guess.

Just take the Surfliner instead, they still serve beer in the club car. Its more expensive on Amtrak, but much better seats, and only one stop between Old Town and OTC. They don't stop in Carlsbad, but there's always plenty of free parking at OTC ...

My favorite is the "drunk train", the Surfliner when it picks up in Solana Beach during the racing season at Del Mar. 800 intoxicated race fans on average, staggering room only ...

The conductors recommend bringing a plastic trash bag, in case someone pukes and starts a chain reaction ...

Sure is better than having them on the freeway !

By the way, Amtrak conductors will generally look the other way if you vape, unless someone whines about it. Easy enough to stealth vape in the single seats on the left side of the lower level ...

FWIW,we know it isn't always what you know, its who you know..Especially in our realm.

I went recently to one of our assistant DA's who has been vaping, and gave him some information about what the ANTZ are doing and how they are promulgating "VAPING REGULATION OUTLINES" to take to local city councils and city officials.

He said he will pass it on to the city leaders,as well as the county sheriffs.and when they come around trying to ban it,they will get the royal heave HO'..

It only points to the importance of networking in your local area either through a friend of a friend,or whatever.we can make a difference, sometimes it just takes a bit to get the the right people..

IM sorry you guys in vista got slammed this way..But for others worried..talk to your low level politicians and see if you can get their ear bent by either you,or someone you know..knowledge is power, and if we can get them knowledgeable before the ignorance comes in,we are way ahead.. I feel this is one way we can stay proactive and on the offense instead of always being on the defense..Lets set up the firewall before the fire even gets sparked..

I made the topic title the same as the title for the article.

I say get all the people you know that vape and go to the next council meeting and mount your defense. Banning PV's has to stop. It's not hurting non-smokers.
