I know the coil/wick of the atomizer head can be replaced. But I was wondering if the actual atomizer head metal base goes bad? And if so how often should they be replaced.

From the looks of them they are nickel coated brass so they shouldn't go "bad". The rubber grommet however will eventually perish or dry out after time. As far as replacement I have the same head in mine that has beent rebuilt at least six times and is three month going strong (rebuild every two weeks or so).
So theoretically speaking, the metal atomizer base should last forever....its just the coil/wick that needs regular replacing?
Ah perfect. Thanks guys that's what I needed to know. If the metal base was considered "hardware" or not. I did read up on that rubber grommet burning. Decided to go the doublecoil method for the NR leg to avoid the burning.
These vivis rock! I mean I have 2 2.5s, 2 minis and tossed 1 head away cause I wicked it to a state I didn't like. My mini is still in the bag... I've used the same stuff for 11 days 0$$. My God, who cares if you need to buy a new one here and there--a pack of clearos is $12. I could burn through those in 2-3 days... The vivi is sweet... It will save you a ton! And the mini Nova looks sleek and cool!
You actually rebuild the coil on a ViVi? do they work better than the replacement heads?
I have been alternating between the vivi nova 1.8 ohm and 2.4 ohm heads for 5 weeks, cleaning every couple days. These things are well worth the price.
I just wash with reg hot water soak for a little while(maybe an hour) in vodka rinse well -dry the wicks with a paper towel and fill it up again. Mine don't get time to dry and so far it works for me.

I recoil mine, and I do feel the cotton wick works better than the replacement heads, and is alot cheaper.
You wouldn't happen to have a Vid I could Look at would you.. I would love to do what your doing..

Yes you can rebuild them. It's simple. I don't use cotton as a wicking material simply because I only vape high voltage and cotton will burn. I've even heard that some people build a mesh wick for them. I haven't tried that just yet but I intend too. I re-wrapped all of mine for 3ohm.

I tried the SS mesh a couple times in the nova, it just doesnt work well. Juice would leak into the center tube under the wick. I think the fiber wick expands a bit and seals against leaks.
Also the coil feet end up heating up before the coil itself, doesn't seem to do that wick fiber wick.
