A lot depends on the juice you're using, some flavours need slightly higher voltage than others to get the best taste. Also the PG/VG mix can make a difference too.

Having said that, when I mix a new juice, I generally start at 3.8 volts, take a few hits and gradually up the voltage to get my sweet spot (for me it's between 4.0 and 5.0 volts mostly).

With a 3.5 ohm coil you should be fine starting slightly higher than 3.8 volts though, from what I've read on here. But that's just my :2c:

im mixing 18mg/ml at 70/30. I appreciate there will be an element of trial and error, but wondered if there was some kind of guideline

I've just found a chart that I had with an old ego battery.
They recommend 4.0 - 4.5 volts with a 3.5 ohm coil, but to be honest you can go higher without to many issues, most manufacturers air on the side of caution.
I'd suggest, start at 4.0 or 4.2 volts and work up from there.

If you're getting the vamo then set it for wattage as opposed to voltage (press both + and - at the same time for about 5 seconds to change from volts/watts and vice versa). Watts are a better indicator of vapor density and TH. Start with about 5 watts and go up. I wouldn't go above 8 watts or you may fry the coil.

I've ordered the vamo-vivi package from fasttech. The 3.5ml novas have 3.5ohm coils. What is the best voltage to set the vamo at? I prefer a strong throat hit, but I don't want to burn them out in the 1st days

That's the best thing about the Vamo- you can run it in VW (not VV) and no matter what ohms device you put on it will always fire at the set wattage. Here's a calculator- just enter ohms and volts and it'll give you the wattage.
Watts - volts - amps - ohms conversion calculator
So setting the Vamo @ 6.4 watts with 3.5 ohms will give you 4.73 volts. I generally use anywhere from 8- 9 watts BUT I like a warm vape.
I'd suggest you set the Vamo to wattage and start at 5 watts and work your way up until you find your "sweet spot". Once you find the wattage you need not adjust every time you attach a new ohms device to it. Understand the advertised ohms is rarely the same as the actual ohms- use the Vamo ohms tool to find the actual ohms. Realize also diff juices taste better at diff voltages.
Best of Luck.
