Volt Batteries, waterproof? Seem to be.

I was washing my truck today and had my volt cig in my front shirt pocket. Bent down to grab the sponge out of the bucket and plop, there it went, into the soapy water filled bucket.

After a few minutes of not realizing where it went, I continued washing the truck. When I finished I checked the bucket, there it was at the bottom.

I went inside and took the front cap off and put it in front of a fan for a couple of hours. Seems to work fine. I was acting up when I first pulled it out of the bucket, would stay on then turn off after 7 seconds. If I pushed the button it would do the same thing.. stay on then flash and turn off after 7 seconds.

After letting it dry I decided to put it on the charger for a few. Didn't take long to fully charge, I took it off and it seems to function normally now.

So, are they waterproof? Seems like it! It was in that wash bucket for at least 15-20 minutes!

Nice job SI!

They can't be totally waterproof. Don't all li-ion batteries have gas vents to help keep them from exploding if they malfunction? Was this a cigalike or an X2?

I'm looking at the bottom end of my X2 now and it doesn't appear to be completely sealed. Just above the metal cap, it's got two small holes on either side. The only thing protecting the usb port is that screw-on cap, which is definitely not completely air tight given that threading alone does not guarantee a seal and the two holes are still exposed with the cap on. It's a manual, so the top is sealed, but I'm pretty sure even manual batteries have some spot on them that lets air out. I think the button is another point that might let air in and out.

The automatics are semi-sealed IIRC. The top post doesn't have a hole in it, but you can still get juice into the battery from the post end if you aren't careful. That's what SI warns, at least.

I mean, sure, it might still work but it's iffy. I wouldn't use a battery that was immersed in liquid. With how cheap these batts are, I would probably dispose of it as soon as a replacement arrived. What if the regulatory circuitry is damaged now and just waiting to go? At best, the battery would just fry itself and cease to function. You also have to wonder if there are any damaged cells in there.

Obviously, water must have gotten in. The way it would shut off at first seems indicative of a short somewhere. If it was acting funny at any point, then something is wrong. Just because it seems to be working now doesn't mean it wasn't damaged by the water.

Why don't you just ask someone from SI? I'd think they would know, if anyone.

I put my volt 78mm stick battery through the washing machine. It holds a charge now but it is an auto and you have to drag so hard on it to get it to light up that it is unusable.

I am wrong! I tried it again after letting it try another few weeks and it works perfectly. SI quality!

Well I decided to toss the manual battery after all. I'm not sure what the culprit is, but it could have been one of two things.
1. Getting it wet in the wash bucket.
2. Charging it frequently using a Mistic wall charger.

I'm not really sure if the charger would change the behavior of the battery, but my mini-autos seem to be behaving similarly. I used the Mistic charger only because sometimes I'd need to charge two batts at one time.

The vapor using the manual battery was not thick at all and very hot, it made me cough a lot. It would quickly heat up the atomizer to a very hot temperature after only a few drags and me coughing. I thought it was the cartomizers but after using my dad's newer black manual Volt, it worked WAY better. Even better than my two little autos. So is the water the culprit or the Mistic charger? Not sure, but I'm only using my Volt charger to be safe.
