I have a new Volt X2 900 mah auto battery which works great.

I would like to buy a second one to have on hand when this one dies. I do not plan to use it, just keep it as a replacement in the future.

How long can these be stored if they are not being used?

When I receive it, I would like to test it to make sure it is not DOA, and then store it.

Any info / advice on achieving these goals would be appreciated.

Not really sure how long they'll last on the shelf, but I can give you tips to extend it...
Store it with a 50%-80% charge and keep in in the refrigerator... that typically extends the shelf life of unused rechargeable batteries. I would expect that you could pull it out, let it warm up to room temp, then put it on a charger to recharge to 100% and use it... even after a couple years or so of storage...

I would suggest though that you keep several batteries in rotational use... you would extend the battery life by simply not having to recharge them nearly as often due to the fact that you would be spreading the workload of the batteries across your battery pool...

That's my :2c:
Hope it helps you out...

*ETA*
Just wanted to add and emphasize... be sure to let the battery warm up to room temp before charging if you stored it in the refrigerator... recharging hot or cold cells is NOT a good idea!!
