im using the smoke relief e-cig(generic cig looking deal)and while im not un happy with it i know just from reading around that my vaping experience could be 100x better, ive been looking at a few models and reading reviews and im torn between the ego(nicotine nirvana has a great deal on 2 of them) or a riva(seems well priced) can anybody using either of these help a newb out? or point me to a better model?

I would say either one of those would be a nice first upgrade.. some people that have had mods of all sorts have turned to these as their "main" vape.

yes there maybe many other choices.. and I am sure people will offer them.. so maybe wait for more response, but I would say that even if there are other options.. it won't hurt to have the ego/riva... I am sure you will use the device well past what you spent on it... so it will not prevent you from upgrading from that, should you desire to, in the future

Best of Luck with your decision..

Well- you are in 510 atomizer land.

Joye, or Janty, are the to main sources for genuine 510 stuff. Janty has a warrantee which is pretty good. There are a number of sources for Joye products.

I like the eGo myself... it's reliable and common.. no problems getting parts or accessories. You can start with an eGo kit and customize as you go with bits and pieces from other starter kits or esoteric 510 PVs.

The bottom line... you can buy all kinds of 510 style kits that vary in quality from bad to great. But a genuine eGo as a starter will not let you down.

Also, to start... just pop for a few extra genuine Joye/Janty 510 atomizers. Some knockoffs are good- but fewer surprises at first is probably best.

I recently was in a position to compare my Riva to the original Joye eGo ( strangely, it happened to be cozzicon's eGo) and I really couldn't find any difference in quality. Either unit is a good choice. That being said, I prefer the button on the Riva. The Riva battery is "rated" 100 mAh higher as well (750 mAh for Riva, 650 mAh for eGo). I'm not completely convinced that the mAh ratings mean THAT much. Battery manufacturers exaggerate mAh ratings all the time.
If you are not concerned with looks you can get longer battery life out of many of the mods on the market. The ones that use an 18650 battery will give you the best battery performance (2400 mAh-3000 mAh) but will be the largest because the 18650 is a pretty big battery. Here's a list of mods currently on the market in case you're interested. e-Cig Mod Database | e-Cig Battery Tube Mods
My current fave is the GLV 2, 5 volt.

That's a decent price on the eGo kit. But, here's an even better price for the same kit --

http://midwestvapor.com/

"save20" in the coupon code box will bring the cost down to about $59.

(I haven't used this vendor myself and these are final sales due to health issues in the family that operates the site. Personally, I haven't had any issues to speak of with Joye eGo kits -- Ive bought 4 of them, so I *would* throw the dice -- your mileage may vary) <g> Good luck.
