I like to watch multiple threads and for extended periods of time, sometimes for months on end.

Is there a limit to the number of threads you can watch?

It seems whenever I'm watching more than 6 or so threads, some threads stop giving me alerts, or are very intermittent in providing alerts.

Ideally I'd like to be able to get alerts for up to 40 threads at a time, as this would better suit the way I like to use the forum.

I've checked my preferences and have the watch thread alerts set up as I want them, just not sure why I'm not receiving all my alerts?

Thank you @retired1

I'm aware of this and think it's the best solution, but I find that I often get no alerts at all for one thread or another that I'm 'watching', but on returning to the thread manually find it has had 20+ new postings over a one or two day period.

I'm wondering why this does not create an alert? The problem seems intermittent as at the same time I will get alerts for other watched threads.

Try resetting the thread. Clear it from being watched and reapply.

I gave up on it, because to do this I would have to locate ALL the threads I am 'watching'. I just can't keep up with every thread in a roundabout fashion, whether back-dooring it (like going to my posts or the long *** list of watched threads) or just locating them by searching. It's sad (at least to me) because my experience of being engaged in a thread is over expect for a couple threads I post in almost every day. I just remembered I signed up for a list and never got another notice of that thread though I know it gets posts up the wazoo! Totally forgot.

Thanks. I knew that was there (that's the 'long *** list" I was talking about), but I never considered using that as my default 'newsfeed'--I think that is what the "alerts" button is for and I should clearly not rely on that. I will try using the main list (maybe I can keep it open on a separate page). A bit more circuitous than being able to see it at a glance from the page I am currently on, but anything is better now than totally missing out.

There's a hard limit to the number of alerts that will show in the "alert dropdown" at the top of the page (25). If you're following more than 25 items, it's entirely possible that you'll miss out on some alerts when you view the list via the popup.

For those of you that are following many threads/forums (more than 25), it would probably be a good idea to check your watched thread and forum lists for updates as well.

Most days I only get only get a few, not a max of 25. I am definitely going to have to do as you are saying because the pop-up is is incredibly sometime-y.

One interesting thing though that I just noticed: since I looked at my long list, after your post, I am now getting alerts to threads I haven't visited in many months. It's like just looking at my long list has refreshed the alerts. Odd. But hey, whatever works.

I have had this exact phenomenon.
A missed "alert" in a thread that I'm watching. Maybe SOMETIMES I skipped viewing the thread, and it thinks I have an alert I haven't followed yet so it sends no more - but I am pretty certain that is not always the case. That sometimes, a thread just plain stops alerting me.
Until I look at it - then it starts again.
Weirdness.
