This tackle company been leaving me messages about an order and saying I need to call em before they will ship. I was like - who the heck is this? Maybe they dialing the wrong number - gave em a call this morning - good thing I did - seems like my CC # was used by someone to purchase $238 worth of fishing tackle online. The reason they called - bill to vs ship to addresses were different. Guess the "thief" should have used his/her tele number instead of mine - but good they didn't. So had to call Discover, get the charge reversed, cancel the card, wait for new one, change all auto bills - and on and on...........well - been purchasing a lot online since I started vaping 5 months ago - and I suspect it has to be someone at one of the companies I ordered from.....make sure and return calls and check your statements................

THe merchant has access to the credit holder's phone number. That's how they call the right number. I've had the same thing happen to me except that the number was stolen from my physically using the card at a gym. It was easy to figure out since they tried to have a bunch of gum clothes and shoes shipped to an address that was not mine. And the gal on the phone told me how she got my phone number. The second time my card number was hijacked was also after using it at an outlet mall. The scammer called me and pretended to be from the credit card company. For verification that he was talking to the real cardholder he wanted me to give him the 3 digit code from the back of the card. LOL! When I told him that he wasn't going to get it, he screamed at me and told me "in that case I will make sure I process all the fraudulent claims and make you pay for them.". Needless to say, I called the credit card company and they immediately cancelled the card.

I still don't know how someone got my account number. Had to have been an online shaddy retailer. Don't think it was ecig related either. Generally I only order from reputable online companies so it kinda bugs me to this day. Though even a reputable company can get hacked. Which is why I tend to not save my billing info on sites.

Now I no longer use my debit card for online purchases to be safe. Credit card disputes are wayyy more simple to deal with.

Doesn't paypal help prevent this type of crap?

I had an ebay dispute back in the day and paypal wanted me to reimburse them for granting a refund. Told then to go choak on a pen and haven't use them since.

In fact ... I can't even use paypal unless I let them charge like $180 on my account ... all from a badly ruled dispute from a decade ago. lol

Dont get me wring - Discover didnt question me one bit - just ...... off.........I think mine was probably an online e-cig retailer employee - that is all I used that card for.

the way I understand it, the online ecig retailers and their employees don't have access to your number. the middleman processor does though (see my earlier post)

Yup ur are correct - what I should have said is "I think mine is related to recent several online e-cig related purchases". Not the vendors or their employees - just found a $25 visa card (wife's and I kinda am now in possession of it - lol) - cant add more money to it - not re-loadable - arggg - am wondering if my bank will let me do the following - open a new account - maintain a $20 balance - get a debit card only linked to this account - before I checkout from vendor's site I transfer funds (for the purchase amount)from my main account to this account - all they fraudmiesters can hit me for is the $20 balance I maintain. Hmmmmmm - time to talk to the bank.....

Just eliminate the bank altogether--get a re-loadable pre-paid card, and only use that. Instant decline because their is no credit backing the account. Leave your personal accounts out of the loop.

I do not use banks at all, so this is very easy for me to do--it might be more of a hassle for many, but this way there is no chance of someone screwing you.

This is what I do. Just make sure you do not have overdraft protection. I got hit a few months back and I didn't know I even had overdraft protection. LOL I don't anymore. Keep an eye on the transactions and all is good. I did get hit but the bank took care of it.

I have seen these cards at Walmart and other grocery stores - and I know you have to pay to activate them - but how much do they charge when you add money to the card?
