I know there was a thread on here recently about credit card fraud but I couldn’t seem to find it. I thought I would start another one so I could warn others out there about some of these online companies out there that must have poor security and / or fraudulent card processing services. I used my Discover card to place three orders from three different vendors recommended here on this list and I was just informed by Discover that my card number had beeen stolen and used to make two large purchases. If I had not tried to use my card and it got denied I may not have caught this issue. Luckily Discover Card fraud dept. had locked the card down till I called them to see about why my card was denied. I have purchased online for years with no problems till now so I guess I’ve been lucky. Just a bit of advice for others always use a credit card not a debit card because you have more fraud protection with a credit card. Also try to know with whom you are dealing with if possible. Two of the vendors I made purchases with I have used before and the other one was someone I didn’t know but had good prices. If I were to guess the problem occurred with the company I didn’t know but I have no way to be sure so just be careful and try to deal with reputable companies.

Sorry to hear about this. If I can suggest anything, it would be to try to stick to vendors that have reputations within the community that they worked hard for. Most of the companies you hear alot of, have a good selection and one of them most likely has what your looking for. Even if i can get a box of cartos for $2 less at a company ive never heard of, im still going to order from one of my "staple" vendors because I know the security is there.

Good luck in the future.

Actually, this MAY have nothing at all to do with the vendor. About a week or so ago, there was a news article about how a company called Global Processors or something like that had been hacked. They are a credit card processing firm.... I've been busy placing a lot of online orders, so I really do need to check my account.

Another thing that recently happened to me was that I placed a small order from a post I saw in the deals and steals thread. When I put in all my info, including credit card, a box popped up from shopify (the cc processor) saying the store was now closed.... The hourglass just sat there for an hour before I closed it....

Actually, for years now I have used prepaid credit cards, you can get one at Walmart, and refill it there, I load it with the money for my order, then place my order. If it gets stolen, no biggie, there is nothing on there. Someone hacked my Google wallet a while back and tried to get me for $10....lol DENIED!!!!!

My CC has the capability of creating a virtual CC number, one that's completely different from the one on the actual card.
On this virtual CC I can place an upper limit (usually $10 - $20 above what I expect to spend) and an expiration date (default is 2 months, but I can extend that up to 12 months), and this is the only thing I use when shopping on line.

Unlike prepaid Debit/Credit cards, this virtual credit card carries no extra/hidden fees, and is a true credit card so is protected from fraud just like the real one.

You might check your CC account or call them to see if something like this is offered to you.

Yep happen to me too with my Discover card. I just got done filling out the form for secure shopping. Google Discover Card Secure shopping. When making a on line purchase a orange box will pop up with your name, address, and a cc number which is not the number on your actual card. It works well and I had used it in the past with no problems with my old computer. When I got the new computer I forgot to put the Discover secure icon on it. Its on my computer now. Try it you'll love it.

This is a good time to remind people, whenever possible don't use a debit card for online purchases. Credit cards are safer in the sense that they're not emptying your checking account.
With a debit card you're out real cash while fraud is investigated. With a credit card you're only out the available credit.
I know this is an older post: but just wanted to mention we have a separate account used only for electronic payments - haven't had a problem so far ...

PayPal also used to have an app that did this ... not sure if they still do ...
