Call me paranoid, but a part of me thinks that the mantra of "you're going to gain weight if you quit smoking" is actually perpetrated by the tobacco industry to keep us smoking.

I mean, think about it. Yes, your habits will change, etc. But most likely if you have been a smoker for a long time, you've got some respiratory challenges. Exercise, especially aerobic, is difficult. I have been smoking for 20+ years and now at the age of 41, I feel the difference. I don't want to do aerobic exercise because I hate that feeling of "omg I can't breathe!" If you quit smoking, you may put something else in your mouth. If you're not vaping then this may be food. Of course you can always choose to eat carrots or celery, or chew gum. But eventually you are going to experience better lung capacity and will be able to exercise MORE and for longer durations which means more calorie burning than when you were smoking and sedentary.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents on it.

I've been counting calories since 2006. I weighed 220 lbs and got down to 140 by the end of 2007. I also exercised quite a bit. Since my day job cut hours due to the recession I had to pick up lots of hours delivering pizzas at night. That in turn, cut out my exercise routine. I currently eat between 2400-3000 Calories per day. I also now have a gf who I'm very compatible with. Before 3 months ago, I was eating about 2200-2600 Caloreis per day. Because of my jump from 2400-3000 per day I've gained 10 lbs in the last 3 months, from 140 lbs to 150 lbs. I WAS spending more money on food (healthy, more satisfying food is expensive) and because I'm trying to pay off debt now I've been spending less on food buying cheap, nonsatisfying fatty foods that cause me to feel hungry more often.

Vaping has not affected my calorie intake.

...I understand that smoking cigarettes is an appetite suppressant *to an extent* but I have NEVER heard of someone gaining 10-20lbs from quitting regular cigs and switching to a vaporizer...

That seems to be ludacris to me. I suppose you would gain 10-20 pounds if you quit smoking, get frustrated, and then begin eating away your stress. But just out of nowhere? Nope.

I gained weight when I cold-turkeyed the cigs, but it was me eating away my stress for sure!

Before I started diet / exercise I was eating 6000 calories per day. Now doing 2600-3000 on average with a few days of the month 1800-2400. Even at 3000 a day I'm currently gaining weight again :(

Weight control is very frustrating yet rewarding. I sympathize with anyone who is doing the same.

yeah! It was insane.. I don't think I could ever go back to that much. Weight 220 lbs at 6000k per day. Just eat fast food meals 3x per day and you'll hit 6000 easy. A McDonalds supersized meal can be easily 2000 in one sitting.

I did 1500-1800 per day for a year but found myself starving all the time, also couldn't build up any muscle that way. Low calorie intake will cause the body to eat muscle up for energy instead of fat. Everyone's different...

Right now 2600-3000 is too much, and am planning to max out at 2400. I count calories with ease now because I know practically everything's caloric value by heart. IF not a google search suffices.

I've noticed I lose 5 lbs in 3 days just by eating 2000 per day. However, I think 5 lbs in one week is unhealthy. Perfect weight loss is 1 lbs / week but yeah I've never been able to do that.. Always lose more or gain more.. lol

I remember reading somewhere that cigarette smoke affected the way the stomach broke down food. The food in a smoker’s stomach would only be 2/3 digested before passing into the small intestine, so we weren’t getting all the calories and nutrients from the food we were eating. When we quit some of the weight gain is just from digesting everything we eat. It kind of makes sense, you see ex-smokers that haven’t changed their eating habits at all still gaining a few pounds after quitting.

A lot of what you say is true, but actually you can lose anywhere from 3-5 pounds a week and still remain healthy as long as you're not starving yourself or excessively working out. :D

It seems you have a good plan though :D

I probably put back on about 20 lbs or so but yeah I do stress eat too. I'm just now comfortable enough with my vaping and past the analogs stage..that I'll be refocusing my efforts back on diet and exercise again shortly. My blood pressure has already dropped a lot and should be back to normal once I can start dropping a bit more weight. I've definitely noticed the change in my endurance though...it used to be that I couldn't walk that much because I run out of breath quickly...now it's my legs that are getting too tired and sore to keep it up...but that's a matter of reconditioning myself now that I can breath again. I will get through this and I'm already feeling 1000X better!
